COLUMBUS, Ohio Bryan Koniecko, a senior on the Ohio State men’s tennis team, will begin first-round singles action Tuesday at the 2008 USTA Knoxville Challenger at the Goodfriend Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Chris Klingemann, a Buckeye letterwinner from 2004-07, won three-consecutive matches in the qualifying rounds to earn a selection in the main draw.

In the first round of qualifying singles, Klingemann, the eighth-seed, defeated Dean O’Brien of Russia in two sets 6-1, 6-3. Klingemann went on to defeat Dann Battistone in the second round 6-3, 6-3. The former Buckeye competed against third-seed Nick van der Meer of the Netherlands in the qualifying-round for a spot in the main draw. After losing the first set, Klingemann bounced back to take the second set in a tie-breaker and kept the momentum going in the final set to win 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4.

Klingemann will take on sixth-seed Frank Dancevic of Canada in the first round.

Koniecko, who received a wild-card entry, will match up against Michael Russell in first-round action. Russell, ranked No. 266, is the all-time USTA Pro Circuit singles title leader.
