COLUMBUS, Ohio – – The No. 26 Ohio State men’s tennis team (20-8, 10-3 Big Ten) defeated No. 40 Brown (23-6, 7-0 Ivy League), 4-0, Saturday in NCAA first round action at the Varsity Outdoor Courts in Knoxville, Tenn. With the win, the Buckeyes advanced to the second round and will face No. 14 and the No. 10 seed Tennessee. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. EST start Sunday at the Volunteer’s home courts in Knoxville.

Sunday’s contest marks the second time Ohio State faced Tennessee in NCAA tournament play under six-year head coach Ty Tucker. In 2001, the Buckeyes fell to the Volunteers, 4-1, in the second round.

In doubles action, Ohio State took a 1-0 lead in the match score after the squad captured the lone point at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. The sophomore pair of Chris Klingemann (Bradenton, Fla./Texas Tech Independent) and Devin Mullings (Freeport, Bahamas/Ft. Lauderdale Prepatory) finished first for the Buckeyes after an 8-5 win over Brown’s Saurabh Kohli and Eric Thomas at No. 2.

The junior duo of Scott Green (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales), ranked No. 5 in the ITA poll, clinched the point for the Buckeyes at the No. 1 position. Green and Wilson handed Nick Goldberg and Adil Shamasdin an 8-2 loss. The match at No. 3 was suspended with Ohio State’s Joey Atas (So. Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and Drew Eberly (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) up in the score, 6-5, over Philip Charm and Rich Moss. Due to inclement weather, the match was moved indoors after the doubles portion to the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center in Knoxville.

In singles, the Buckeyes netted the next three points and clinched the match win on the No. 5 court. Atas wrapped up first for Ohio State after a 6-2, 6-3 straight set win at No. 3 over Brown’s Thomas. Mullings followed at the No. 1 spot with a three-set victory over No. 86 Shamasdin. After a 6-2 performance in the first set, Mullings fell, 6-4, in the second. He retaliated with a 6-4 win in the third set tie-break to put Ohio State’s third point on the board.

Junior Buckeye Wilson sealed Ohio State’s trip to the NCAA second round after he defeated Brown’s Charm, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 5. The matches on courts Nos. 2, 4 and 6 were suspended after Ohio State clinched the 4-0 victory.
