Columbus, Ohio- – The Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team began its 2002-03 season with a convincing 138-92 victory over the Ohio Bobcats. The Buckeyes would finish second in the opening race of the meet, the 400 medley relay, due to a disqualification, and would proceed to take first in each of the meet’s remaining 12 competitions.

Nine Buckeyes would post victories in events including freshman Marty Tomes (Cincinnati, Ohio), who in his first meet as a Buckeye, won both the 200 freestyle at a time of one minute, 44.72 seconds and the 200 butterfly at 1:55.90. Tomes also was a part of the first-place 400 freestyle relay (3:10.91).

Seniors Nick Rees (Nassau, Bahamas) and Vladi Dusil (Darmstadt, Germany) posted wins in events as well. Rees won the 100 freestyle (48.03) and was a part of the 400 freestyle relay win as well. Dusil took first in the 500 freestyle (4:47.86).

In diving, sophomore Mitch Richeson (Indianapolis, Ind.) continued his success where he swept the 1- and 3-meter events with scores of 185.95 and 331.50, respectively. Freshman Marc Dreyer (Port Elisabeth, S. Africa) took second in both competitions.

Ohio State improves to 1-0 on the season, the Bobcats fall to 0-1. The win puts Bill Wadley, Ohio State head coach, just two wins away from his 125th at Ohio State and three away from his 150th career victory.

The Buckeyes will be back in action Nov. 8 when they travel to Morgantown, W.Va. to take on West Virginia and Louisville. The meet begins at 5 p.m.
