COLUMBUS, Ohio – True champions rise through adversity.

Those were the opening lines in a message from senior captain Zach Mason and the Ohio State men’s soccer team to 10-year old Buckeye fan Ivan Applin. The team recently heard about Ivan’s story and his love for Ohio State before undergoing a heart procedure at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Michigan. In a video sent to Ivan and his family, the Buckeyes invited Ivan to be an honorary captain at a home match this season. Within two hours, the team got a response back as Ivan watched the video and was thrilled to accept the invitation.

Ivan is doing great following his procedure that installed a device to fix holes in his heart. He was walking and eating later the same day and able to return home the following morning. He had no incision, stitches or blood transfusion, and will be able to return to normal activities within a few weeks.

The Ohio State men’s soccer team is excited to announce Ivan will be thew team’s honorary captain Sunday, Oct. 8 vs. Wisconsin. First kick is at 2 p.m. ET at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
