BALTIMORE, Md. –Dan Denihan scored two goals and dished out four assists and Rob Frattarola added three goals to lead the eighth-ranked JHU men’s lacrosse team to a 12-7 victory over Ohio State at Homewood Field. The win is the third straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 4-3, while the Buckeyes drop to 3-5.
The game was tied, 5-5, at halftime before the Blue Jays put the game away by out-scoring the Buckeyes, 3-1, in the third quarter and 4-1 in the fourth. A.J. Haugen gave Hopkins a 6-5 lead just 1:55 into the second half. Ohio State tied the game for the last time when Sandy Boyce (Jr., Butler, Md.) scored his second goal of the game with 10:43 left in the period. The Blue Jays then put the game away with a 5-0 run during which they held the Buckeyes scoreless for 19:49.
Ohio State came out strong, jumping to first-half leads of 3-1 and 5-3. Pat Meyers (Fr., Kennebunk, Maine) scored both of his goals in the first half. The Buckeyes also got first-half tallies from Nick Miceli (Fr., Monkton, Md.), Kevin Stephan (So., Massapequa, N.Y.) and Boyce. However, the Blue Jays got back-to-back goals from Denihan in a span of 1:09 late in the second quarter to tie the game at 5-5.
The Buckeyes got two goals each from Meyers and Boyce and Curtis Smith (Fr., Saanichton, B.C.) added a goal and an assist.
Buckeye goalkeeper Mike Abeles (Sr., Westfield, N.J.) went the distance and finished with a career-high 28 saves. Hopkins goalie Brian Carcaterra played all 60 minutes and made nine stops.
The win improves Hopkins’ winning streak in the month of April to 21 games. The Blue Jays have not lost in April since 1996 and have held the opposition to less than 10 goals in 17 of the 21 wins during the streak. The Buckeyes will play their next two games on the road, as the team travels to Fairfield Friday and plays at Stony Brook on Sunday.
