COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team (2-5, 0-0 GWLL) was defeated by No. 2 Duke (11-0, 2-0 ACC), 21-8, Saturday in Durham, N.C. Buckeye senior Tom Randisi had a team-best four points and a career-high three assists in the game.

The teams traded goals early in the first quarter, as Kyle Dowd scored 35 seconds into the game for the Blue Devils and Andrew Bender (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), on an assist from Kyle Olson (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), responded with a goal just over four minutes later for OSU. Duke then went on a six-goal run, with four goals to close out the opening stanza and the first two scores of the second quarter, before Olson scored a goal of his own to stop the Duke streak. The Blue Devils scored the last two goals of the second quarter to head into halftime ahead, 9-2.

In the third quarter, Duke outscored the Buckeyes, 8-1, including the first seven goals of the period. Randisi’s (Sr., Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) man-up goal, assisted by Ben Wolff (Jr., Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) accounted for the lone Buckeye score of the quarter.

Ohio State scored two man-up goals, both assisted by Randisi, in the first 56 seconds of the third quarter. Craig Nolan (Jr., Plano, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) scored with 14:37 remaining, followed by an Olson goal 33 seconds later. Soon after, a 36-minute weather delay forced the teams into the lockerroom with 13:39 remaining in the game. Once play resumed, Duke scored four of the next five goals, with John DeCanio (So., Clifton, Va./Robinson) tallying for OSU. The Buckeyes ended the scoring with two goals in the last 20 seconds, as Nolan scored with 20 seconds remaining and Wolff tallied with no time left on the clock.

The Buckeyes were outshot in the game, 49-26. In net for OSU, Mike Rimmer (r-Fr., Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) started and played 57:21, allowing 19 goals and making 16 saves. Bill Curry (Fr., Wilton, Conn./Wilton) played the last 2:39, giving up two goals.

Ohio State won 18-of-30 faceoffs in the game. Eric O’Brien (So., Powell, Ohio/St. Charles Prep), who had a team-high nine groundballs in the game, won 11-of-21 draws, while Jon Rydberg (r-Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) won 7-of-9 faceoffs.

The Buckeyes converted 3-of-6 man-up chances vs. Duke, while the Blue Devils scored once on two opportunities.

Olson was second for OSU with three points and he and Nolan shared team-high honors with two goals each vs. Duke. Bender and Wolff had matching 1-1-2 totals. For the Blue Devils, Zack Greer and Matt Danowski each had four goals, while Dan Flannery and Kyle Dowd each scored three times. Danowski added two assists for a game-high six points.

Bender, Randisi and Olson each extended their scoring streaks to five, while Wolff, OSU’s leading scorer, has at least one point in all six games this season and is on a 13-game point streak dating back to last season.

The 21 goals scored by the Blue Devils were the most allowed by Ohio State since March 23, 1999, when Virginia topped OSU, 21-0.

The Buckeyes close out their three-game stretch of road games with their Great Western Lacrosse League opener at Butler next week. OSU will meet the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. April 9 in Indianapolis, Ind.
