COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team (4-5, 1-0 GWLL) downed visiting Robert Morris (0-11), 18-5, Friday at North Turf Field. The Buckeyes were led by sophomore Bryan Keane, who had a career-best three assists and team-high three points. Four Buckeyes – Craig Nolan, Jon DeCanio, Gary Bining and Jason Lutz – scored two goals each, while Andrew Bender, Lance Vitt and Casey Mulford each had a goal and an assist. In all, 16 Buckeyes had at least a point in the game.
Ben Wolff (Jr., Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) opened the scoring with a goal 56 seconds into the contest, followed by a Jon DeCanio (So., Clifton, Va./Robinson) goal at 12:07. The Colonials got on the board with a goal by Eric DeSalvatore with 10:20 on the clock. OSU then went on a 10-goal run, with two goals in the first quarter, seven in the second quarter and the first goal of the third.
Kyle Olson, (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) made the score 3-1 with 3:02 left in the first quarter and Bender (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) scored with 2:11 left to give OSU a 4-1 edge at the end of one.
The Buckeyes outscored Robert Morris, 7-0, in the second quarter. Lutz (So., Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) scored his first goal of the game at 13:27, with Nolan (Jr., Plano, Texas/Dallas Jesuit College Prep) scoring less than a minute later (12:36). Tom Randisi (Sr., Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) scored 52 seconds later, followed by a Vitt (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) goal eight seconds after (11:36). Nolan, DeCanio and Lutz closed out the scoring in the quarter to send OSU into halftime with an 11-1 lead. Stephen McKinlay (Fr., Coquitlam, British Columbia/Western Reserve Academy (Ohio) opened the scoring in the third quarter with a goal at 8:41. DeSalvatore ended the Buckeye run with a goal with 5:47 on the clock, but OSU responded with back-to-back goals seven seconds apart (at 4:39 and 4:32) by Gary Bining (Jr., Delta, British Columbia/Delta Secondary) and Eric O’Brien (So., Powell, Ohio/St. Charles Prep). Todd Greenhalgh added a goal for the Colonials with 3:58 remaining in the quarter before Mulford (Md./Loyola) scored with 26 seconds remaining on an assist from Keane (So., Amherst, N.H./Souhegan).
The Buckeyes outscored the Colonials, 3-2, in the final quarter. Carlo Sunseri scored a man-up goal with 8:48 on the clock, but OSU responded with a goal by Bining 12 seconds later (8:36) followed by a Josh Wittenberg (Jr., Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) EMO goal at 8:02. Michael Fleming scored RMU’s second man-up goal of the game with 6:05 remaining and Mat Ballay (Fr., The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) ended the scoring in the game with 1:03 remaining, assisted by Keane.
Ohio State outshot Robert Morris in the game, 44-16. All three Buckeye goalies saw action. Mike Rimmer (r-Fr., Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) started the game and played the first 36:19, making five saves and allowing one goal. Bill Curry (Fr., Wilton, Conn./Wilton) played 12:41 of the second half, allowing two goals. Drew May (r-So., St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) closed out the last 11 minutes, making one save and allowing two goals.
Ohio State won 21-of-25 faceoffs in the game. O’Brien won 11-of-13 and had a team-best eight groundballs, while Jon Rydberg (r-Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) won 10-of-12 draws.
The Buckeyes return to action with Great Western Lacrosse League action with two road games next weekend. The team will take on Denver at 6 p.m. EDT April 22 in Denver, Colo., and Air Force at 2 p.m. April 24 in Colorado Springs Colo.
Wolff’s goal extended his point-scoring streak to 15. He is the only Buckeye with at least one point in all nine games this season and has a goal in all nine outings.
Olson, Randisi and Bender each extended their scoring streaks to seven. Randisi also is on a seven-game goal-scoring streak.
Chris Friel (Fr., Northfield, N.H./Tilton School), Mulford, Andy Elmer (So., Shawnee, Kan./Rockhurst Jesuit), Greg Baggan (r-Fr., Lutherville, Md./Boys Latin), Ballay and Alex Daniel (r-Fr., Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) all saw their first action as Buckeyes in the game.
May saw his first action in goal since March 22, 2004 vs. Marist.
This was the first time Ohio State and Robert Morris met on the lacrosse field. RMU is in its first season as a Division I men’s lacrosse program.
Nolan had his third consecutive two-goal game. Bining’s two goals were a career best. DeCanio is on a three-game goal-scoring streak and has at least one goal in four of the last five outings.
Olson and Wolff are tied for the team goal-scoring lead with 14 goals each. Olson has a team-best 18 points, followed by Wolff with 17.
