COLUMBUS, Ohio Led by five points from junior Joel Dalgarno and hat tricks from junior Jeff Ryan and senior Kevin Buchanan, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team downed Villanova, 15-8, Tuesday in Villanova, Pa. The Buckeyes led, 10-4, at halftime, en route to their third-consecutive win.
The Buckeyes, now 4-2 on the year, return home to host No. 13 UMBC at 11 a.m. Saturday in Columbus.
Ohio State took a 2-0 lead 5:15 into the game on goals from junior Peet Poillon at 11:29 and Buchanan at 9:45. The Wildcats got on the board at 5:27 when R.J. Lyons scored unassisted, but Dalgarno responded eight seconds later following the ensuing faceoff after a win by Nick Carr, who picked up his first career assist. James Green, a Philadelphia native, scored at 3:54 to make the score 3-1. Villanova’s Tommy Nolan added a goal at 1:26, but Buchanan scored his second goal of the game with 14 seconds left in the quarter to put Ohio State ahead, 5-2, at the end of the first quarter.
Villanova’s Mark Scioscia tallied 1:29 into the second quarter but the Buckeyes responded with a three-goal run and outscored the Wildcats, 5-1, before the end of the quarter to go into halftime ahead, 10-4. Buckeye senior Ricky Pages scored his first goal of the season at 11:11, followed by Poillon’s goal at 5:10 and Buchanan’s tally 12 seconds later (4:58). Chris Aitken ended Ohio State’s stretch of goals with a score at 3:17. Ryan scored twice for the Buckeyes in the final 2:02 of the half, set up by Dalgarno at 2:02 and Ryan Keneally with 45 seconds left, marking Keneally’s first career assist.
Scioscia scored the first goal of the second half, tallying at 13:19. Ohio State again went on a three-goal run, started by sophomore Mario Ventiquattro’s goal, assisted by Dalgarno, at 11:20. Dalgarno added a goal of his own less than a minute together (10:48). There was no scoring until Green tallied for the Buckeyes with 3:13 left in the quarter.
Villanova scored the next two goals, with Tommy Nolan scoring a man-up goal with 26 seconds remaining in the third quarter and Tim Driscoll posting a goal 1:44 into the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes cored the next two goals, as Ventiquattro scored at 9:20 and Dalgarno found Ryan at 6:26. Villanova’s Andrew Henrich ended the scoring with 16 seconds left in the game.
Ohio State had 30 shots in the game, including 14 in the second quarter. Villanova had 31 shots in the game and outshot the Buckeyes, 21-7, in the second half. Buckeye senior goalie Stefan Schroder made 11 saves in the game while playing all 60 minutes. The Wildcats’ Andrew DiLoreto had seven saves in all 60 minutes.
Ohio State has held each of its opponents to eight goals or less this year.
Dalgarno, with a season-best five points, now has 113 points as a Buckeye, with 65 goals and 48 assists, to tie for 21st in program history with Brian Williams (1990-93). He extended his point streak, which began in his first game as a Buckeye, to 33 games and has four or more points in three of the last four games. He has a team-best 10 assists and 22 points on the year.
Buchanan now has 119 points as a Buckeye to remain in 19th place in program history. Buchanan is on a 35-game point streak that began with two games remaining in the 2005 season (May 1, 2005 vs. Fairfield). He has 64-45-109 totals during the stretch and has multiple points in each of his last 18 games. He leads the Buckeyes in goals (16) this year and is second in points with 20.
Green has two points in all six games this season, with his first two-goal game coming against Villanova.
Poillon has seven goals and eight points in the last three games combined.
After he was held scoreless in the season opener, Ryan has multiple points in each of the last five games, with hat tricks in his last two outings.
Ventiquattro has five goals and seven points in the last three games combined.
