SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Freshman goalie Mike Betz made 32 saves to lead the Ohio State men’s hockey team to a tie, 2-2, against Notre Dame at the Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Ind., tonight.

The Buckeyes move to 12-10-2 overall, 9-7-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Irish are now 5-17-5, 3-11-4 in conference play.

After a scoreless first period, the Buckeyes tallied the first goal of the game 9:07 into the second stanza. Jean-Francois Dufour tallied with the Buckeyes on a 5-on-3 power play, assisted by R.J. Umberger and Dave Steckel. The assist extended Steckel’s team-best scoring streak to 14 games.

The Irish tied the game at one with a short-handed goal by Ryan Dolder 6:07 into the third period.

The Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead when Umberger took the lead pass from Mike McCormick and got the puck past Irish goalie Kyle Kolquist 11 minutes into the stanza. Notre Dame again tied the game (2-all) when David Inman tallied at the 16:31 mark with both squads skating four aside.

Ohio State had the majority of scoring chances in the overtime period, outshooting the Irish, 3-0, but could not capitalize and the game ended tied at two.

The Buckeyes killed 2-of-2 Notre Dame power plays and were 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

After a week off, the Buckeyes return to action Feb. 2-3 when they play host to Notre Dame in Value City Arena. Faceoff is set for 7:35 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2 and 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3.
