The Ohio State hockey fell behind early and could never recover in a 5-1 loss to Alaska-Fairbanks at the Big Dipper Arena Saturday afternoon. It marks OSU’s first loss of the season.

The Buckeyes fall to 2-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCHA. Alaska-Fairbanks evens its mark to 1-1-0.

The Nanooks pelted the Buckeye net the entire night. OSU goaltender Ray Aho made 39 saves on 44 UAF shots. Ohio State put just 21 shots on net. The Buckeyes went 1-of-6 on the power-play, while the Nanooks connected on 2-of-8 power-play opportunities.

Dwayne Zinger and Sjon Wynia each scored in the first period for UAF. Ohio State came out strong in the second period, controlling the tempo of the game and peppering Alaska-Fairbanks goaltender Lance Mayes. OSU finally connected at 4:16 in the second when Eric Meloche took a long pass from Jean-Francois Dufour on the wing and ripped a slapshot over the shoulder of Mayes. Jason Crain also was credited an assist on the goal, which was scored during a 5-on-4 situation.

Midway through the second period, the Nanooks scored a pair of goals in a span of 1:05, putting the game out of reach.

The Buckeyes will return to action Friday when they host Western Michigan at 7 p.m. in Value City Arena.
