BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Ohio State men’s hockey team fell to Ferris State, 4-2, Friday at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich., in the first game of a two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series. The teams will square off again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Ewigleben Ice Arena to wrap up the series.
The Buckeyes dropped to 10-12-5 on the year (8-9-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association), while the Bulldogs improved to 8-18-3 overall (5-14-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association).
The Buckeyes and Bulldogs skated to a scoreless first period, but there was plenty of action with Ohio State out-shooting Ferris State, 13-9.
While the first period featured plenty of shots but no goals, the second period again featured plenty of shots and also saw the teams combine for four goals. Ferris jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal at 6:44 of the period but Ohio State responded to tie the game (1-1) just 1:04 later. Junior defenseman Kyle Hood (Osoyoos, British Columbia) tallied the equalizer at 7:48 of the second, with assists from senior defenseman Tyson Strachan (Melfort, Saskatchewan) and junior forward Tommy Goebel (Parma, Ohio). Penalties then hurt the Buckeyes, as Ferris State scored on a 5-on-3 power-play at 10:45 to go up, 2-1. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 3-1 at 12:33 of the period while skating 4-on-4. OSU out-shot Ferris, 14-10, in the second period and owned a 27-19 shot advantage through two periods.
Ohio State missed a golden opportunity early in the third period when it failed to capitalize on a 4-minute double-minor penalty against Ferris State. The lost chance would come back to haunt the Buckeyes, as the Bulldogs increased their lead to 4-1 with a power-play goal at 11:11 of the period. OSU cut the deficit to 4-2 at 15:33 on a 6-on-4 power-play goal by junior Sam Campbell (Hamilton, Ontario) after Ohio State pulled goalie Joseph Palmer (Fr., Yorkville, N.Y.) for an extra attacker. Freshman Mathieu Picard (St. Isidore, Ontario) and junior Matt McIlvane (Naperville, Ill.) assisted on Campbell’s first goal of the season. The Buckeyes spent a large portion (4:40) of the last quarter of the third period with Palmer out of the net for the extra attacker, but were unable to score. Palmer made 26 saves on the night for the Buckeyes, falling to 10-10-4 on the year. Ohio State ended the game with 37 shots, while the Bulldogs had 30.
The Buckeyes were 1-for-9 on the power play in the game, while Ferris State was 2-of-6.
Buckeye forward Tommy Goebel tallied an assist and ran his point streak to a season-high nine games (3g, 8a). Goebel now has 13 assists on the year and 22 points (9g, 13a), which ranks second on the team in scoring, one point behind Sean Collins (23 points; 8g, 15a).
Kyle Hood’s goal was his third of the year and his sixth point (3g, 3a).
Sam Campbell tallied his first goal of the year.
John Markell, Ohio State head coach
“We got outcompeted tonight. We had enough shots on net to win the game. We have to execute better; part of the execution is scoring goals. This time of year you have to persevere through stuff and we didn’t play the road game we needed to play tonight.”
