TROY, N.Y. – The Ohio State men’s hockey team scored twice on the power play but fell, 4-2, to Colgate in the first round of the 56th Annual Rensselaer/Bank of America Holiday Tournament Friday in Troy, N.Y. The game featured two 5-on-3 goals by each team and Colgate scored its other two 4-on-4 as the teams were assessed a total of 26 penalties for 52 minutes.

Colgate scored two power play goals and a 4-on-4 goal in the first period to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Marc Fulton opened the scoring with a 5-on-3 goal in just 2:36 into the game when he fired in a one-timer from the left circle that sailed in over shoulder of freshman goaltender Joseph Palmer (Yorkville, N.Y.). The Red Raiders added a 4-on-4 goal 1:04 later when Mike Werner picked up a turnover in the OSU zone and blasted it in five-hole from the left side.

Tom Riley tallied another 5-on-3 goal for Colgate at 13:05 when he tipped in the loose puck from the left doorstep behind Palmer, who was set in the center of the net. Although the Buckeyes trailed 3-0 after the opening period, they had an 11-6 advantage in shots.

Ohio State scored a 5-on-3 goal of its own 6:52 into the second period. Senior defenseman Sean Collins (Troy, Mich.) fired a shot on goal. Classmate Kenny Bernard (Sarnia, Ontario) picked up the rebound and flipped it over to sophomore Corey Elkins (West Bloomfield, Mich.), who backhanded the puck into the goal from directly in front to cut the Colgate lead to 3-1. The goal was Elkins’ fifth of the season, while Bernard registered his fifth assist and Collins picked up his eighth. The score remained 3-1 into the second intermission with Ohio State still leading in shots, with a 20-13 margin after two periods.

Colgate upped its lead to three goals again at 11:20 of the third period. Jesse Winchester scored a 4-on-4 goal from the right doorstep to increase the score to 4-1.

While Ohio State was skating 5-on-3, Collins blasted in a slap shot from the slot at 16:32 to cut the score to 4-2. His third goal of the season was assisted by Elkins, his second, and junior defenseman Jason DeSantis (Oxford, Mich.), his team-leading 12th helper.

With 32 seconds remaining in regulation, the Buckeyes pulled Palmer for an extra attacker. The move was to no avail as the teams skated to a 4-2 final.

The Buckeyes and Red Raiders each were 2-for-11 on the power play and were each assessed 13 penalties for 26 minutes. The teams combined for a total of 28:11 in time spent on the power play.
