BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team routed in-state foe Bowling Green, 9-3, Friday at the BGSU Ice Rink in the first game of a two-game CCHA series. Sophomore Corey Elkins tallied a hat trick in the win as 15 different Buckeyes tallied points, including seven players who had multi-point games.
The Buckeyes improved to 3-6-2 on the year (3-4-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association), while the Falcons dropped to 3-7-1 overall (1-6-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association).
The Buckeyes scored three goals in a 1:25-span and jumped out to a 3-0 lead just under eight minutes into the first period. Junior Domenic Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) put OSU on the board at 6:23 of the first, scoring on assists from Tyson Strachan (Sr., Melfort, Saskatchewan) and Tommy Goebel (Jr., Parma, Ohio). Just 42 seconds later Strachan notched his first goal of the year, a power-play tally, to put the Buckeyes up 2-0. Goebel and Andrew Schembri (Sr., Mississauga, Ontario) assisted on the goal. Then, just 43 seconds after that, Elkins (West Bloomfield, Mich.) scored his first of three and gave OSU a 3-0 lead, assisted by Mathieu Picard (Fr., St. Isidore, Ontario) and John Dingle (Jr., Shaker Heights, Ohio).
Bowling Green cut the lead to 3-1 at the 17:20 mark of the first period, scoring on the power-play, but the Buckeyes pushed the lead to 4-1 on a Kevin Montgomery (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) goal at 19:35 of the first. Junior Sam Campbell (Hamilton, Ontario) and Dingle assisted. Ohio State led 4-1 and out-shot BG 12-7 at the end of one. The onslaught continued in the second period as OSU stretched the lead to 5-1 on a Goebel power-play goal at 3:54 of the second, with Mathieu Beaudoin (Sr., Sherbrooke, Quebec) and Schembri notching assists. Another Buckeye power-play goal by senior Sean Collins (Troy, Mich.) at the 12:28 mark put Ohio State up 6-1. Junior Jason DeSantis (Oxford, Mich.) and senior Kenny Bernard (Sarnia, Ontario) tallied assists. The Falcons scored a short-handed goal at 17:38 of the second to make the score 6-2 at the end of two.
Bowling Green tried to get back into the game by cutting the deficit to 6-3 on a power-play goal at 7:47 of the third period but the Buckeyes responded with three goals to close out the scoring. Elkins tallied his second goal of the game, an unassisted strike, at the 13:21 mark to make it 7-3 and then Dingle scored at 16:38 to make it 8-3. Junior Johann Kroll (Plymouth, Mich.) and senior Bryce Anderson (Waterloo, Iowa) had the assists. OSU closed out the scoring on Elkins’ third goal of the game at the 17:09 mark, with Anderson and Campbell garnering assists.
Buckeye goaltender Joseph Palmer (Fr., Yorkville, N.Y.) made 21 saves on the night to improve to 3-4-2 on the year. Ohio State ended the game with 25 shots, while the Falcons had 24.
The Buckeyes were 3-for-9 on the power play in the game. The Falcons converted 2-of-13 chances.
Ohio State and Bowling Green will square off again Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in the BGSU Ice Rink. It is the final game of the series in the only CCHA meeting scheduled between the teams this season.
Elkins’ hat-trick was the first of his career. The sophomore now has four career goals.
Montgomery, a freshman, tallied his first career goal.
Dingle (1g, 2a) and Goebel (1g, 2a) also had three-point outings in the win. Goebel has 61 career points.
Anderson notched his first two points (2a) of the season.
Beaudoin’s assist gave him 70 career points, while Schembri’s two assists pushed his career total to 77 points.
DeSantis notched his team-leading 11th assist.
Seniors Collins and Strachan both tallied their first goals of the season. Collins has 67 career points.
John Markell, Ohio State head coach
On the win
“Obviously our penalty kill came to play today. That was nice to see. We gave them enough opportunities to score. But our goaltending was solid again, and we scored at the right time.”
On team starting to play systems better
“They’re starting to trust each other. We didn’t have that previously.”
Corey Elkins, Buckeye sophomore forward
On his adjustment to the college game
“It’s a different game than juniors, a lot faster paced. I’m used to being able to control the play, slow the play down, and that’s not the way we play. It’s something I’ve had to adjust to. I’m getting some good ice time and getting into the flow. I definitely like I’m starting to get my game going. It wasn’t my best game, but I played well. It helps to put the puck in the net.”
