DURHAM, N.H. – The No. 12/13 Ohio State men’s hockey team was defeated by St. Cloud State, 3-1, in the consolation game of the Ice Breaker Tournament Sunday at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.

The loss drops the Buckeyes to 0-2-0 on the season, while SCSU improves to 1-0-1. New Hampshire and St. Lawrence are meeting in the tournament’s title game.

The Buckeyes and Huskies were scoreless through the first period. OSU had six power-play chances and SCSU had two. The Buckeyes were outshot in the period, 9-7.

The Huskies got on the board 7:58 into the second period, as Dave Iannazzo scored on a 5-on-4 advantage just as a 5-on-3 chance expired. OSU was unable to score on two power-play chances and went into the third with a man advantage. SCSU was 1-for-4 in the period on the power play. OSU outshot SCSU in the stanza, 9-8.

T.J. McElroy scored at 4:18 of the third period to put SCSU up, 2-0. Sam Campbell (Fr., Hamilton, Ontario) cut the Huskies’ lead to one (2-1) with the first goal of his career at the 7:12 mark. He picked up the rebound of a Kyle Hood (Fr., Osoyoos, British Columbia) shot and backhanded the puck in the net. Dan Knapp (Jr., Rochester, Mich.) picked up the second assist on the goal. Andrew Gordon regained SCSU’s two-goal lead, converting a breakaway at 14:57. The Buckeyes pressured the Huskies in the period, outshooting them, 19-7, and pulling the goalie with 55 seconds remaining, but were unable to draw closer.

OSU ended the game with 35 shots on goal, while the Huskies had 24. OSU goalie Dave Caruso (Roswell, Ga.) made 21 saves in his first start of the year. SCSU goalie Jason Montgomery had 34 saves, including 18 in the third period.

OSU was scoreless on 10 power-play chances in the game, while St. Cloud State was 1-for-7. OSU was assessed nine penalties for 18 minutes and SCSU took 12 penalties for 24 minutes.

Ohio State returns to action next weekend when it travels to Big Rapids, Mich., to take on Ferris State in the CCHA opener for both squads. The teams will meet at 7:35 p.m. Friday and at 5:05 p.m. Saturday in Ewigleben Arena.

Postgame Notes
Two Buckeyes saw their first action as Buckeyes – Zach Pelletier and Kyle Hood. In all, 10 freshmen dressed for the Buckeyes against St. Cloud State.

Campbell’s goal was the first of his career, while Hood’s assist was his first point as a Buckeye.

The game was the first meeting between Ohio State and St. Cloud State.

Ohio State’s 0-2 start is the first since the team lost both games of the 1998 Ice Breaker Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn. In that tourney, OSU lost to Boston College in overtime in the opener and then fell to the host Gophers in the consolation game.
