BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Sophomore Matt Beaudoin’s third-period goal broke a 2-all tie and lifted the Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 4-2 win over Ferris State in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association opener for both teams at Ewigleben Ice Arena Friday. Buckeye freshman Tom Fritsche had a team-best three assists in the game for his first career points.
OSU improves to 1-2-0 on the year and 1-0-0 in the CCHA, while FSU remains winless at 0-3-0 and 0-1 in league play.
The teams will end the two-game series at 5:05 p.m. Saturday in Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids. Ohio State and Ferris State, part of the same CCHA scheduling cluster, also will meet at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 7-8, 2005.
Ohio State scored two power-play goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead at the 8:05 mark. Andrew Schembri (So., Mississauga, Ontario) put the Buckeyes on the board at the 4:20 mark, putting in the rebound of a Fritsche (Fr., Parma, Ohio) shot from the side of the net with OSU on a 5-on-3 advantage. Kyle Hood (Fr., Osoyoos, British Columbia) picked up the second assist on the goal. Rod Pelley (Jr., Kitimat, British Columbia) scored a power-play goal of his own at 8:05, picking up the puck from Fritsche just outside the blueline and skating through the Bulldog defensemen before beating goalie Mike Brown. Adam Miller then cut OSU’s lead to one with a goal at 16:04 following a faceoff deep in the Buckeyes’ zone.
In the first, the Buckeyes scored twice on six power-play chances. FSU was scoreless on three chances. With OSU killing off a 5-minute major, OSU was assessed a minor penalty to put FSU on a 5-on-3 advantage for two minutes with 2:07 remaining in the period, but OSU successfully stopped the Bulldogs on the chance. Each team had five shots on goal in the period.
Ferris State tied the game 15:51 into the second period when Zac Pearson tallied. Each team was unable to score on the power play (OSU 0/3; FSU 0/4) in the period. OSU outshot the Bulldogs, 10-6, in the period.
In the third, Beaudoin (So., Rock Forest, Quebec) put OSU up, 3-2, with a goal at 12:42. The Buckeyes ended the scoring with an empty-net, power-play goal by JB Bittner (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.), assisted by Dan Knapp (Jr., Rochester, Mich.) and Fritsche, with 16 seconds remaining. OSU was 1-for-3 with the man advantage and stopped four FSU chances in the period. The Buckeyes were outshot in the period, 7-5.
OSU goalie Dave Caruso (Jr., Roswell, Ga.) recorded the win, making 16 saves on 18 Ferris State shots. Brown took the loss for the Bulldogs, with 16 saves on 20 Buckeye attempts.
The Buckeyes were 3-for-12 on the power play in the game. The Buckeye penalty killing was outstanding, stopping the Bulldogs on all 11 chances, including the five-minute major.
The Buckeyes are 15-15-2 all-time in CCHA openers, including 3-1-1 in the last five.
