BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost, 6-2, to Ferris State Saturday (Feb. 3) at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich., in the second game of a two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series.
The Buckeyes drop to 10-13-5 on the year (8-10-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association), while the Bulldogs improve to 9-18-3 overall (6-14-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association). Ferris State swept the series with the Buckeyes after a 4-2 win Friday.
Ferris State jumped out in front of the Buckeyes, 4-0, after one period of play, including a power-play strike by Brendan Connolly with 1.7 seconds left in the period. The Bulldogs opened the scoring 3:16 into the game on Evan Case’s score, and then added a goal at 8:19 by Matt Verdone, Mark Bomersback’s shorthanded tally at 12:01 (short-handed) and Connolly’s goal.
Ohio State made a change in net to start the second period with freshman Nick Filion (Cornwall, Ontario) entering the game for classmate Joseph Palmer (Yorkville, N.Y.). In the period, the Bulldogs went ahead, 5-0, with a power-play goal by Adam Miller at 9:41. The Buckeyes got on the board at 13:58 with a 5-on-3 power-play goal by junior Tommy Goebel (Parma, Ohio). Goebel now has tallied points in 10-consecutive games (4g, 8a), a season-high for the Buckeyes. Senior Sean Collins (Troy, Mich.) and junior Jason DeSantis (Oxford, Mich.) assisted on Goebel’s goal. Ohio State made the score 5-2 with 5-on-4 power-play tally at 15:15. Senior Bryce Anderson (Waterloo, Iowa) tallied the goal, with assists from seniors Kenny Bernard (Sarnia, Ontario) and Matt Waddell (Armstrong, British Columbia).
Ferris State extended its lead to 6-2 with a power-play goal by Verdone at 1:32 of the third period. That was all the scoring in the period as the Bulldogs closed out the win.
Palmer made five saves in one period of action for Ohio State and fell to 10-11-4 on the year. Filion made 23 saves in two periods of action. The Buckeyes ended the game with 40 shots, while the Bulldogs had 34.
The Buckeyes were 2-for-12 on the power play in the game, while Ferris was 3-of-8.
After concluding its five-game road swing, Ohio State now returns home next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 9-10) to take on CCHA foe Northern Michigan in a two-game series. Both games start at 8:05 p.m. The game Friday will be televised live on CSTV.
Buckeye forward Tommy Goebel tallied a goal and ran his point streak to a season-high 10 games (4g, 8a). Goebel now has a team-best 10 goals on the year and 23 points (10g, 13a), one behind Sean Collins (24 points; 8g, 16a) for the team scoring lead.
Bryce Anderson’s goal was his third of the year and his seventh point (4g, 3a).
Jason DeSantis notched his team-high 19th assist of the year. He has a career-best 21 points this season (2g, 19a).
