Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s ice hockey team topped Alaska Fairbanks, 3-2, Saturday in Value City Arena to complete a two-game sweep of the Nanooks. JB Bittner had the gamewinning goal for the second consecutive night as he extended his goal-scoring streak to six games.

Paul Caponigri posted an assist for the 100th point of his career, extending his point-scoring streak to six. He is the 48th Buckeye to reach the century mark, as he has 40-60-100 totals. Freshman Andrew Schembri tallied for the Buckeyes, marking his first collegiate goal.

The win improves the Buckeyes to 6-3-0 on the year and 5-1-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Nanooks drop to 3-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in league play.

The Buckeyes return to action with a road trip to Marquette, Mich., to face Northern Michigan. The teams will face off at 7:35 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7-8.

The Nanooks took a 1-0 lead 3:33 into the game, as Ryan Campbell scored on a backhand shot. Dan Knapp (So., Rochester, Mich.) tied the game at the 13:01 mark, taking the pass from Caponigri (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) and skating in on UAF goalie Preston McKay, beating him with a backhand for his second goal of the season. Knapp leads the Buckeyes with 10 points this season and has a point in all but one game on the year. The Nanooks put 14 shots on net in the period, while the Buckeyes had eight.

The score remained tied until there were just under two minutes remaining in the second period. Schembri (Mississauga, Ontario) took a long, lob pass from Thomas Welsh (Jr., Regina, Saskatchewan) just inside the UAF blueline and beat a Nanook defender before getting the puck past McKay. Each team had 15 shots in the period.

In the third, Bittner (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) converted a one-timer off a pass from Nate Guenin (So., Aliquippa, Pa.) with Ohio State on the power play to extend the Buckeye lead to two (3-1) with just under five minutes left. Matt Waddell (Armstrong, British Columbia) also assisted on the goal, Bittner’s team-best fourth power-play tally of the season. UAF’s Felipe Larranaga scored at the 17:57 mark to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to one. The squad pulled McKay with 42 seconds left for the extra attacker, but the Nanooks could not get the tying goal. The Nanooks outshot the Buckeyes in the period, 14-9.

Betz made 41 saves on 43 UAF shots, while McKay had 29 stops on 32 Buckeye shots.

OSU was 1-for-5 on the power play and stopped the Nanooks on all four chances.

Postgame Quotes
Ohio State head coach John Markell
On the game:
“I was very happy with our effort tonight. Alaska Fairbanks is a good hockey team and they are the best team we’ve seen so far. Our guys played hard for 60 minutes and I think this is a game we can build off of.”

On Andrew Schembri’s performance:
“Schembri’s goal was a big lift for the team. His effort tonight is really something you want to see out of a freshman. Goals like that really can give a young player a lot of confidence.”

OSU junior captain JB Bittner
On the game:
“The game was a lot cleaner tonight. We knew they were going to come out hard, but that’s something they always do. When (Mike) Betz gives up a goal (early) he really zones in and he kept us in the game when they were getting a lot of chances. Betz really shut the door for us tonight.”

OSU freshman Andrew Schembri
On his first goal:
“I was really excited about the goal and I think it gave us a lift.”

Alaska Fairbanks head coach Guy Gadowsky:
“Tonight we were in the game, but after (Mike) Betz made such an unbelievable save (toward the end of the second period), you begin to wonder about the night. Ohio State is a clean team who plays hard all the time.”
