MARQUETTE, Mich. The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to Northern Michigan, 6-1, Sunday in game three of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association first-round playoff series in the Berry Events Center. The Buckeyes won the first game (4-3), but the Wildcats won games two (4-2) and three to clinch the best-of-three series.

The Buckeyes, the No. 11 seed in the tournament, end their year 12-25-4. The No. 6 Wildcats (17-18-4) advance to the quarterfinal round where they will take on defending NCAA champion Michigan State.

Northern Michigan scored the only goal of the first period with just 55 seconds remaining. Andrew Sarauer picked up the puck in the Northern zone and passed up to Mark Olver. Olver’s snapshot found the upper right corner of the net to put the Wildcats on the board. Each goalie made 10 saves in the period, with NMU outshooting Ohio State, 11-10. Buckeye sophomore goalie Joseph Palmer made two point-blank saves five minutes in to keep the game scoreless. Each team had two power-play chances in the period.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead 14:48 into the second period with a 5-on-3 goal. Jared Brown won the draw at the left faceoff circle to Erik Gustafsson. He passed on to Olver, whose one-timer from the point found the back of the net. The Buckeyes outshot the Wildcats, 15-9, in the period, and had a number of quality scoring chances. The Buckeyes had three power-play chances in the period and NMU converted 1-of-2 opportunities.

Northern scored twice in the first 2:06 of the third to go ahead, 4-0. Phil Fox scored from the left wing at 1:24, followed by Brown’s power-play goal at 2:06. The Buckeyes got on the board at 3:24 when freshman Peter Boyd picked up the puck after work down low from classmates Patrick Schafer and Kyle Reed and was able to beat NMU goalie Brian Stewart to the net after the goalie had gotten out of position at the side of the cage. Matt Siddall added the Wildcats’ fifth goal at 7:41 with Northern on the power play, tallying from the left faceoff dot. Ohio State pulled Palmer for the extra attacker with 5:13 remaining. The team again had chances, but was unable to get the puck in the net. NMU closed out the game with an empty-net goal with 52 seconds left. The Buckeyes had 11 shots in the period, the Wildcats 10. Ohio State had three power-play chances, while NMU was 2-for-4.

The Buckeyes outshot the Wildcats, 36-30, in the game. Palmer had 24 saves in 55:40 for the Buckeyes. Stewart stopped 29 shots in all 60 minutes.

Ohio State did not score on eight power-play chances in the game. Northern Michigan was 3-for-8 with the man advantage.

Postgame Notes
The game was the final collegiate contest for the eight Buckeye seniors – Jason DeSantis (Oxford, Mich.), John Dingle (Shaker Heights, Ohio), Tom Fritsche (Parma, Ohio), Goebel (Parma, Ohio), Kyle Hood (Osoyoos, British Columbia), Johann Kroll (Plymouth, Minn.), Phil Lauderdale (Greenwich, Conn.) and Matt McIlvane (Naperville, Ill.).

Goebel ended the season as the Buckeyes’ leader in goals (21) and points (36). John Albert had a team-best 17 assists. Boyd was second in points (24) and tied K. Reed for second in goals with 10 each.

This is the second-consecutive season Ohio State and Northern Michigan met in the first round of the CCHA playoffs, with NMU coming from a game down to win both series.

Reed ended the season on a four-game scoring streak (3-2-5).
