Brad Smith and Kyle Coconis fire rounds of 66 and 68, respectively

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s golf team shaved 15 strokes off its round Saturday, shooting an 11-under 277 in the second round of the Ron Moore Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz. The 18-hole score is tied for the lowest of the tournament on the par 72, 7,015-yard Palms Course at the Palm Valley Golf Club and is lowest team round by the Buckeyes this season. Ohio State climbed eight spots and sits in seventh place going into the final round Sunday. San Diego remains in the lead, following an opening round of 277 with a 10-under 278.

Freshman Brad Smith led the Buckeyes in the second round with a career-low 66 (-6), to vault into a tie for 10th with a total of 139. The round was the second lowest of the tournament as Smith bested his previous low by five shots. The native of Peru, Ind., also leads the field in par 5 scoring by two shots at 9-under. Smith’s average on the four par 5s is an astounding 3.88 per hole.

Senior co-captain Kyle Coconis improved his score by eight shots with a 4-under 68 to tie his career low set earlier this season at the Landfall Tradition (Oct. 27). The Zanesville, Ohio, native advanced up 33 spots to a tie for 28th at 143.

The two rounds in the 60s today marked 14 for Ohio State this season, already 11 more than all of last season.

Freshman Bo Hoag, of Upper Arlington, Ohio, shot a 1-under 71 and is even for the tournament (144) to sit tied for 32nd place. One stroke back is Patrick Simard, who shot an even-par 72. The sophomore from Marbella, Spain, is tied for 36th with a total of 145. Senior co-captain Zach Sebert, from Grove City, Ohio, follows in 44th place after shooting consecutive rounds of 73.

After 36 holes, the Buckeyes are second in the field in par 5 scoring at 18-under on those holes. Ohio State is sixth in par 3 scoring (+9) and fourth in birdies (37).

In the individual competition field of 24 golfers, all three Buckeyes rank in the Top 10 led by Dan Rush in second place at 5-under 139. The junior from Avon Lake, Ohio, fired a 4-under 68 Saturday, one of only three rounds in the 60s by the individuals after two rounds. Fellow junior Kevin Grabeman is tied for fourth at 143 with rounds of 71-72. Freshman Tanner Murphy, competing in his first event, is tied for seventh at 146 (72-74).

The Ron Moore Invitational concludes Sunday with a final 18 holes. The teams and individuals will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. (PT).
