COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State men’s golf team finished in ninth place at the Rio Pinar Intercollegiate Tuesday. The Buckeyes shot rounds of 299-293-291 (883) over the two-day, 54-hole event at the Rio Pinar Country Club (par 72, 6,978) in Orlando, Fla. This marks the first tournament of the season that the Buckeyes shot all rounds under 300.
Chattanooga won the event with a score of 862 (284-291-287). The Mocs finished with a one-stroke victory over No. 17 Tulsa after starting the final round trailing by three strokes. Brett Myers of Tulsa won medalist honors after firing off rounds of 68-68-72 for a score of 8-under 208.
Ohio State freshman Patrick Simard (Marbella, Spain/I.E.S. Ortega & Gasset) led the Buckeyes and had his best collegiate finish as he tied for seventh place and shot a tournament total 217 (73-74-70). The 1-over score for Simard was the best by a Buckeye this season. Simard also tied for fourth in total birdies (12). Senior Colin Biles (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) finished in the Top 25 (T17) for the fifth time out of six tournaments played. He shot rounds of 76-73-71=220.
Senior Jack Tyler (Novi, Mich./George Washington) tied for 48th place (74-75-75=224) and was tied for sixth in par-5 scoring (-4). Senior David Vallina (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) tied for 63rd place after rounds of 76-76-75 (227).
Junior Zach Sebert (Grove City, Ohio/Otterbein College) shot an individual season best tournament total of 228 (77-71-80) and tied for 69th place.
The Buckeyes return to action March 17-18 at the E-Z Go Chris Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
