%^$Buckeyes win fourth game over ranked opponent
%^$Ohio State got its revenge. In the Buckeyes’ 1997-98 season, the lowest%^$point might have come at Minnesota. Ohio State didn’t forget, and its%^$revenge came Saturday with an 89-60 victory over the 17th-ranked Golden%^$Gophers. The Buckeyes (15-5, 5-2 in the Big Ten) won for the fourth time%^$in five tries against a ranked opponent during a grueling three-week%^$span. They have won the four by an average of 20 points, including routs%^$of then-No. 13 Indiana (73-56) and No. 16 Purdue (72-43).%^$

%^$Quincy Lewis,%^$the conference’s leading scorer, was the only player for Minnesota%^$(12-4, 3-3 Big Ten) in double figures. He hit his average with 23%^$points. It was Minnesota’s second-worst loss ever in 117 meetings with%^$Ohio State, surpassed only by a 94-63 Buckeye win in 1992. It was also%^$the most points Ohio State had scored in a conference game in more than%^$six years. No team had shot better than 44.6 percent against Minnesota%^$all season.%^$

%^$But Ohio State – leading the Big Ten in shooting – hit%^$33-of-61 from the field for 54.1 percent to the Gophers’ 38 percent. The%^$Buckeyes’ starting five was 8-for-17 from 3-point range. Penn hit%^$9-of-13 shots from the field and also had four assists and four%^$rebounds. In addition to Redd’s 19 points, Singleton was 7-for-8 from%^$the field for 16 points and Ken Johnson had 10 points, eight rebounds%^$and four blocked shots. As in their 72-43 victory over Purdue four days%^$earlier -which they led 42-22 at halftime – the Buckeyes dominated the%^$opening 20 minutes and never trailed in building a 43-32 lead at the%^$break. Redd scored five points in the opening 26 seconds and the%^$Buckeyes hit nine of their first 10 shots from the field to build a 21-5%^$lead by the 15:44 mark. Redd had 10 points in the early surge.%^$

The%^$Buckeyes went from unranked (No. 28) in the AP Top 25 poll to its%^$current position for a jump of 13 spots following 29-point wins over%^$both Purdue (73-42) and Minnesota (89-60) last week.%^$

%^$Ohio State above .500 in games where both teams are ranked
%^$Ohio State owns a 41-32 (.562) record when it has been ranked and is%^$facing a ranked opponent. The Buckeyes lost to No. 12 Iowa earlier this%^$season while holding down the No. 21 spot in the Associated Press Poll.%^$The last win for OSU in a game when both teams were ranked was March 27,%^$1992 when No. 3 Ohio State defeated No. 18 North Carolina 80-73. The%^$last time the Buckeyes faced Michigan State when both squads were ranked%^$in the AP Top 25 was Jan. 13, 1993 when No. 23 Michigan State defeated%^$No. 21 OSU, 77-60. The Spartans are 3-2 all-time when ranked and pitted%^$against a ranked Buckeye squad. %^$

%^$Redd earns third Big Ten honor
%^$Redd earned his third Big Ten Player of the Week honor by averaging%^$24.5 points and 4.5 assists and helping the Buckeyes to wins over two%^$Top 20 opponents (No. 16 Purdue/No. 17 Minnesota) last week. In the win%^$over the Boilermakers, Redd scored 30 points, which included a 14-for-21%^$outing (67 percent) from the field. Against Minnesota, Redd scored 19%^$points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists. He shot 57%^$percent on the week (21-37).%^$

%^$Redd reaches OSU milestone
%^$Sophomore Michael Redd (1,043) became just the third sophomore in Ohio%^$State history to reach 1,000 points after his 30-point effort against%^$Purdue. Herb Williams (1978-81) and Jim Jackson (1990-92) are the only%^$other Buckeyes to reach 1,000 points at OSU as sophomores. Only five%^$players have scored 1,000 points in their first two seasons at OSU. In%^$addition to Williams and Jackson, Jerry Lucas (1960-62), Dave Sorenson%^$(1968-70) and Brad Sellers (1985-86) each reached 1,000 points in their%^$second year at Ohio State. Lucas and Sorenson were juniors who were not%^$eligible as freshman and Sellers was a senior. He transferred from%^$Wisconsin.%^$

%^$OSU earns back-to-back wins over ranked teams twice in 1998-99
%^$With a win over then-No. 19 Wisconsin and the 73-56 victory over%^$then-No. 13 Indiana the Buckeyes earned victories over back-to-back%^$ranked foes for the first time since the 1992 campaign when No. 8 Ohio%^$State downed No. 12 Michigan State on the road 78-65 Feb. 29 1992. Ohio%^$State then moved to No. 5 and beat No. 18 Michigan 77-66 in Columbus%^$March 3, 1992. Again this season, the Buckeyes matched the back-to-back%^$feat over the ranked by downing No. 16 Purdue 72-43 and No. 17%^$Minnesota, 89-60. %^$

%^$Ohio State 4-1 vs. the ranked, looking to improve vs. No. 11 Spartans
%^$Ohio State will be facing its sixth ranked team when the Buckeyes%^$travel to No. 11 Michigan State Tuesday. The Buckeyes have not won more%^$than four games against ranked opponents since the 1991-92 season when%^$the Buckeyes went 5-3 vs. ranked teams. The last time the Buckeyes faced%^$Michigan State when it was ranked among the Top 25 was Feb. 4, 1998 when%^$the No. 16 Spartans prevailed 84-58 in Columbus. The last time Ohio%^$State beat a ranked Michigan State squad was Feb. 29, 1992 when the No.%^$8 ranked Buckeyes won 78-65 over the No. 12 Spartans in East Lansing. %^$

%^$Ohio State seeks 6th win in Big Ten for 1st time in five years
%^$With a 5-2 record in Big Ten play, the Buckeyes will be seeking its%^$sixth win in the conference for just the first time in the last five%^$years. Ohio State has not won six league games since a 6-12 campaign in%^$1994.%^$

%^$Buckeyes earn first ranking since 1992-93 season
%^$Ohio State’s No. 21 ranking in the Associate Press Poll was the first%^$Top 25 appearance for the Buckeyes since a No. 24 spot in the AP Poll%^$Jan. 24, 1993. Ohio State also is No. 23 in the ESPN/USA Today poll this%^$week. %^$

%^$Buckeyes playing in most difficult seven games in OSU history
%^$The six ranked opponents in seven games rates as one of the most%^$difficult stretches for a Buckeye squad in history. The Buckeyes played%^$six ranked teams during an eight-game segment of the schedule last%^$season from Jan. 14 to Feb. 11, 1998. In that stretch Ohio State faced%^$six Big Ten teams ranked from Nos. 10-21. In the current series of%^$contests, Big Ten foes will be in the Nos. 12-20 range. No other Buckeye%^$team as faced such a difficult stretch of games. %^$

%^$Buckeye starters scoring high from the field
%^$The five players who have started each game for Ohio State this season%^$are knocking down 52 percent of their shots this season (441-852).%^$Senior Jason Singleton leads the way with a .714 shooting percentage%^$(80-112). %^$Ohio State makes quickest turnaround in school history
%^$Ohio State equalled its win total from last season with the win over%^$Florida Atlantic (99-70, 12/17/98). The win over the Owls marked the%^$quickest an OSU team equalled the previous season’s win total in school%^$history (minimum eight victories). OSU finished the 1997-98 campaign%^$with an 8-22 mark and reached that total Dec. 17. The previous record%^$for quickest turnaround from one season to the next was during the%^$1915-16 to 1916-17 seasons. OSU was 9-13 in 1915-16. The Buckeyes won%^$their ninth game the following year Jan. 13, 1917 against Oberlin%^$(38-14). OSU finished 15-11 that season. %^$

%^$Michigan State at Indiana
%^$Mateen Cleaves collected 16 points and 13 assists as No. 10 Michigan%^$State ripped off the decisive run midway through the second half to post%^$a 73-59 18th-ranked Indiana. Looking more like the team to beat in the%^$Big Ten with every game, Michigan State (15-4, 5-1 Big Ten) held Indiana%^$scoreless for nearly eight minutes during the pivotal 16-1 burst. The%^$Spartans won for the 12th time in 13 games and earned their fifth%^$consecutive victory in conference play. They snapped a six-game losing%^$streak at Assembly Hall, winning at Indiana for the first time since%^$1990. A.J. Guyton scored 23 points for Indiana, but leading scorer Luke%^$Recker had just one point — a foul shot with 7:35 to play. Recker had%^$scored 20 or more points in his previous five games, including a%^$season-high 28 against Northwestern Jan. 13. Cleaves turned in his%^$second consecutive double-double, having collected 15 points and 10%^$assists in Thursday’s 80-65 home win over Iowa. That effort allowed the%^$reigning Big Ten Player of the Year to become the 27th player in%^$Michigan State history to reach the 1,000-point plateau and move past%^$Magic Johnson into fourth place on the school’s all-time assists list. %^$
