COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams fared well at the fourth annual Wheeling Jesuit Invitational. The event was an open, non-scoring NCAA Track and Field Competition.
The Ohio State women garnered five first-place finishes, including dominating performances in the throwing events. Erin Carter (Jr., Logan, Ohio/Logan) placed first in the shot put with a toss of 48-6 ľ (14.80 m) while teammates Alexis McCall (So., Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) and Krista Keir (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville) finished second (47-2 ˝,14.39m) and third (47-1, 14.35m), respectively. In the discus, Keir finished first with a throw of 170-10 (52.07m). Katy Craig (Sr., Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) was second in the event (144-8, 44.10m) while Carter was third (140-10, 42.94m) Craig continued her success in the hammer throw, placing first with a distance of 177-1 (53.97m). Keturah Lofton (Fr., Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) took second (174-8, 53.24m) and Holly Carr (Jr., Hillsboro, Ohio/Hillsboro) was third (147-11, 45.10m). Kati Stevens (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) finished first in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:16.88. Natalie Gentry (Jr., Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky Perkins) also placed first in the high jump with a leap of 5-5 (1.65m
The Ohio State men compiled nine first-place finishes. Sophomore Dan Taylor (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) set a new school record in the discus with a throw of 180-2 (54.92m), beating a 20-year old record. Kevin Akins’ previous record set in 1982 was a distance of 178-2. Taylor also bested the shot put event with a throw of 61-1 Ľ (8.62m) and placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 182-7 (55.65m). In the long jump, Billy Millis (So., Copley, Ohio/Copley) took first 22-8 (6.91m) while teammates Nosa Ehimwenman (So., Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood Flossmoor) and Brad Hart (So., Centerburg, Ohio/Highland) finished second (22-5 Ľ,6.84m) and third (21-8, 6.6m) respectively. Derrick Butler (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/LeSalle) placed first in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:29.15. JJ O’Rielly (Sr. Dover, Ohio/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) placed second (14:29.58) and Dan Glaz (Fr., Palos Hills, Ill./A.A. Stagg) was third (14:40.03). Todd Helber finished first in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:53.36 while Chris Basinger recorded a win in the 1,500 meter run (4:01.58). Brian Olinger (Fr., Fresno, Ohio/Ridgewood) won the 3,000 meter steeplechase ( 9:24.38) and Jeff Cerveny (Jr., Wadsworth, Ohio.Wadsworth) placed first in the high jump with a leap of 6-10 ľ (2.10m). Ohio State returns to action Friday and Saturday when the Buckeyes host the All-Ohio Championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The event, which features nine Division I and two Division II schools from Ohio, will begin Friday at 3 p.m. and will continue Saturday at 9 a.m.
