Men’s 4x800m Relay Takes Fourth at Drake Relays

Des Moines, Iowa – The women’s 4x800m relay team – Sarah Kanney, Olivia Smith, Lainey Studebaker and Rachel Weber – outran nine other foursomes with a time of 8:42.70 on its way to a third-place finish at the 108th edition of the Drake Relays Friday evening at Drake Stadium.

Kanney, normally a 3,000m steeplechaser, got the relay started with a split of 2:14.67. She then passed the baton to Smith, who finished her two-lap trot with a readout of 2:12.61. Studebaker (2:10.60) and Weber (2:04.84) closed out the relay in fine fashion for the bronze.

The men’s 4x800m relay squad of Alex Lomong, Dominik Seitzer, Kevin Blank and Jared Fleming capped off the night with a fourth-place showing in their event. Lomong got out of the blocks and around the track twice with a time of 1:53.50 and Seitzer followed that with a readout of 1:53.31 for his leg. Blank threw down a 1:50.46 split and Fleming closed it out with a 1:48.89 for a team time of 7:26.14.

The rest of the day at the Drake Relays was strictly for qualifying. In the 100m dash, Deshawn Marshall (10.48/personal record) and Nick Gray (wind-aided 10.53) both won their heats to automatically advance to the finals. Aaliyah Barnes will represent the women in the same event; she had the second-fastest qualifying time with a 11.63.

Chantel Ray will run in the finals of the 100m hurdles at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. Ray clocked a time of 13.51 to advance. 

Both women’s and men’s 4x100m and 4x400m relay easily advanced to the finals tomorrow:

Women’s 4x100m (45.95) – Barnes, Beatrice Hannan, Allison Mayfield-Brown and Bliss Soleyn
Women’s 4x400m (3:38.74) – Hannan, Karrington Winters, Barnes and Maggie Barrie
Men’s 4x100m (40.60) – James Clark, Duan Asemota, Gray and Marshall
Men’s 4x400m (3:11.77) – Champ Page, Gray, Asa Burke, Marshall

Five athletes donned the Scarlet and Gray at the first day of the Ashland Alumni Open, all of whom competed in the hammer throw.

Representing the women were Sade Olatoye, Kate Deaton, Grace Azenabor and Alexis Dowdy. Olatoye tossed the hammer 60.30m (197-10) on her way to silver and Deaton placed fourth with a mark of 56.73m (186-02). Azenabor tallied a sixth-place finish with a career-best throw of 54.92m (180-02). 

The lone male competing, Max Seipel made the most of it. On his fifth attempt of the day, Seipel launched the hammer a whopping 59.11m (193-11) to finish as the top collegian in the open section and third overall
