COLUMBUS, Ohio — Melissa McGhee, who was a member of the Buckeye dance team from 2007-11, has been hired as the Ohio State dance team head coach, spirit squad head coach Lenee Buchman announced Friday.
“Melissa brings enthusiasm, expertise and commitment to the program and the university,” Buchman said. “We are excited to continue to work together as one unit under the spirit program.”
A native of Toledo, Ohio, McGhee is set to earn her business degree in marketing Sunday at Ohio State’s Spring commencement. She has been an integral part of the dance team for the past 4 years, watching the team transition and grow from club to varsity status while being voted captain and most valuable team member in 2010-11.
“I am truly excited to join the Buckeye family and be a part of the tradition and the excellence at The Ohio State University,” McGhee said.
McGhee also has been actively involved away from dancing, serving as a peer advisor for Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business where she was a recipient of the Morrill Scholarship Award of Distinction and the Fisher College of Business Pacesetter Award – the college’s highest honor presented to the student(s) who exemplify outstanding scholarship and leadership. She also has served as an office associate in the football office and executive intern at the Target Corporation last summer.
Patrick Carmichael will continue to work closely with the dance and cheer teams as well. Carmichael, who was an Ohio State cheerleader from 1997-2001, has years of experience in coaching, planning and choreographing dance and cheer routines. In addition to his volunteer duties with the spirit program, Carmichael has worked as an instructor at Ballet Metropolitan Academy in Columbus since 2007. He also has served as a coach/choreographer with the Ohio Marauders and Columbus Destroyer dance teams and at Bishop Watterson and Amanda Clearcreek High Schools.
“It is an honor to be a coach at a top-rated school like The Ohio State University,” Carmichael said.
McGhee replaces former dance coach Trisha McCarthy who served as head coach for the past 2 years.
