COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gene Smith, Ohio State director of athletics, announced Tom McGinnis, Mike Penner, TJ Shelton and Dan Wallenberg have been elevated to associate directors of athletics.
“These promotions reflect the increased duties and responsibilities each individual assumed over the last 12 months, along with their continued high level performance on a year to year basis,” Smith said. “It is an honor to work with them each day.”
McGinnis is now the associate athletics director for administration. A full-time member of the Ohio State staff since 1999, McGinnis oversees all human resources functions for the department, including policy development, payroll, staff recruitment, orientation, development and personnel budgets. He also serves as the administrator for the OSU Ice Rink, equipment and information technology and assists in the game-day operations for football.
Penner is the associate athletics director for event management. Penner, who has been in the department since 2001, and the event management staff are responsible for maintaining the facility schedule and for the coordination of all home contests, tournaments and championships and special events in athletics facilities. He also oversees the camps and clinics department, which holds more than 100 camps and clinics each year.
Shelton, a Buckeye since 2007, is an associate athletics director for sports administration. He oversees the men’s and women’s swimming, diving, cross country, track and field and lacrosse programs, as well as field hockey and synchronized swimming.
The associate athletics director for communications, Wallenberg oversees the athletics communications office. The spokesperson for the department and the contact for the men’s basketball team, he and his staff are responsible for the media relations for all 36 Ohio State sports. He also oversees radio contracts for Ohio State sports.
