Thad Matta, Ohio State Head Coach
On the game
“We weren’t very good. It’s just that simple. West Virginia had a lot to do with it. We couldn’t capitalize on the momentum and really let our guard down on defense. After we went up early in the first, they got their big run and that was it for us. Our free throws came up empty. In the second, we never could overcome their early run. We just didn’t have the bite in us today. We need to learn how to fight back all the time.”

On his message after the game
“This is reality. We got beat and that’s the reality. This game isn’t just one game. We have three days to get ready for Big Ten play and we need to be ready to beat Iowa. We have to get better.”

On Ohio State’s first timeout of the second half
“I took that timeout because I thought we could be on the verge to cut the lead. In the first, we had a lot of great looks. However, we just didn’t have it today. I’m more upset with our performance on defense more than anything.”

On scoring through contact
“We didn’t finish well under the basket. They did better fighting around the basket. We had great looks, but didn’t convert at all.”

Evan Turner, Ohio State sophomore guard
On the game
“I can’t say much. We were bad on offense and defense and didn’t play up to our abilities. West Virginia took advantage of all of our mistakes.”

On his performance
“I didn’t do anything different. My shots just didn’t fall. It happens to all of us.”

Jeremie Simmons, Ohio State junior guard
On the game
“We missed a lot of shots and got out rebounded. We didn’t match West Virginia’s toughness today. It was a one-game thing, but we’ll be back.”

On his shooting
“I just started shooting more because it was tough to get Evan (Turner) and B.J. (Mullens) the ball. West Virginia’s defense was great today.”

Bob Huggins, West Virginia Head Coach
On the first half against Ohio State
“When you’re small like we are, we need to pressure the ball at all times and I thought in the first half we didn’t do a very good job of forcing them out. I thought we held the ball too much. We were down seven in rebounding in the first half and I thought we were more active in the second half. I told our guys to block out higher and that was the main emphasis I told them at halftime.”

On playing at Ohio State
“It’s nice to play well here. I have tons of friends and family who were at this game and have spent the majority of my life here. We needed to play hard against a very good basketball team today. I have wonderful kids that play hard. I wish they would grow to be 6’10’,’ but these kids do what they need to do to win games.”

On West Virginia’s effort in the second half
“This is pretty much what we’ve been doing all year. We are plus ten in rebounding, but that may be misleading with the competition we’ve faced. Our guys have really bought into the system and really attacked the rim today. There was going to be a lot of contact today and we did a good job of scoring under a lot of pressure. We didn’t want Ohio State to have structure on the defensive end and I thought we did a good job of spreading them out by not letting their big guys stay underneath the basket.”
