Ohio State Postgame Notes

  • OSU has now played in nine overtime games (2-7) in the NCAA Tournament (the last game before tonight was on March 17, 2007, when OSU outlasted Xavier 78-71 in the Second Round in Lexington, Kentucky). Their last previous loss in an NCAA tournament game came against Michigan 75-71 on March 29, 1992 in the Regional Final.
  • OSU’s only other overtime game this year came at home on February 3, when Ohio State defeated Purdue 82-70.
  • This is OSU’s first defeat in the NCAA First Round since the Buckeyes fell to Utah State 77-68 in overtime in 2001.
  • Evan Turner has now tallied seven straight games of scoring in double figures when he scored 25 points in the 74-72 loss to the Saints. He has had 30 double-digit scoring games in 33 outings this season. Turner has now scored at least 17 points in his last seven games.
  • Jon Diebler’s two three-point conversions tonight placed put him tied for sixth place all-time in three-pointers made in school history with 144 conversions (Jamie Skelton also had 144 three-point conversions from 1991-94). He also passed Michael Redd (1998-00) for seventh in OSU history with 397 career three-point attempts (Redd attemped 395 three-point shots). Diebler attempted 11 three-point shots tonight.
  • Ohio State (22-11) made their first NCAA tournament appearance since appearing in the 2007 National Championship game, where they lost to the University of Florida 84-75 in Atlanta. With David Lighty injured and out of the lineup, the Buckeyes had no players with extensive NCAA tournament experience (reserves Danny Peters and Mark Titus saw limited action during OSU’s 2007 tournament run). OSU won the National Invitational Tournament in 2008, defeating Massachusetts 92-85 on April 3.
  • UD Arena was host to Ohio State for their two NCAA tournament contests back in 2006, where OSU bested Davidson 70-62 (on March 17) before falling to Georgetown 70-52 (on March 19). OSU also played at UD Arena for the First and Second Rounds of the 1991 NCAA Tournament. The top-seeded Buckeyes defeated 16th seed Towson State 97-86, then ousted 8th seed Georgia Tech 65-61. OSU defeated 4th seed North Carolina 80-73 before falling to Michigan in the Regional Final 75-71 in overtime.
  • The Buckeyes embarked on their 21st NCAA tournament appearance, where they are now 37-20 overall. OSU has appeared in nine Final Fours, are four-time runner-ups, and won the 1960 National Championship.
  • OSU is now 1-1 all-time against Siena. The Buckeyes dispatched the Saints 101-57 in Columbus on December 4, 1986. OSU is now 3-3 against current members of the Metro Athletic Conference. The Buckeyes upended MAAC member Iona 71-53 back on December 20 in Columbus. Current Maryland coach and 2002 National Champion Gary Williams coached the team.
  • Thad Matta has won at least 20 games in each of his nine seasons as a head coach with stops at Butler (2000-01) and Xavier (2001-02 season through the 2003-04 campaign) before arriving at OSU in 2004-05.
  • Matta is 12-7 overall in NCAA tournament play as a head coach.
