Ohio State vs. Delaware State

Ohio State is 88-18 in home openers and 84-22 in season openers.

Thad Matta is now 9-0 in season openers as a head coach … He is 5-0 at Ohio State after going 1-0 at Butler and 3-0 at Xavier.

 Matta improved his career record to 208-66 in his ninth season as a head coach … He is 106-35 in his fifth year at Ohio State.

When playing at St. John Arena, the Buckeyes have an all-time record of 430-151 over 42 seasons (1957-1998) plus four games played there since the move to Value City Arena.

The Buckeyes have won 51-consecutive games against unranked opponents in Columbus (47 in Value City Arena, three in St. John Arena and one in Nationwide Arena) … Their last loss to an unranked team was vs. Minnesota, Jan. 19, 2005 (60-56 OT).

Under Matta, OSU is 60-1 against unranked opponents in Columbus, including a 55-1 mark in VCA, 4-0 in St. John Arena and 1-0 in Nationwide Arena.  

The Buckeyes are 47-3 when shooting 50 percent or higher in the Matta era. They shot 52.8 percent from the field Thursday.

David Lighty scored the first points of the 2008-09 season with a field-goal at 18:02 and finished the night with a game-high tying 13 points … The junior forward made his team-leading 45th start.

Freshman William Buford tied Lighty for the lead in scoring with 13 points in 22 minutes in his first game as a Buckeye.

Dallas Lauderdale and Jeremie Simmons each made their first career starts at Ohio State.

Lauderdale had a career-high seven blocks in just 19 minutes of action against Delaware State … His previous high was three vs. UMass in the NIT Final last season.

The Buckeyes opened the first half with a 7-0 run, not giving up a field goal until 16:12 when Marcus Neal hit a three-pointer … They did not allow another point until 13:26.

Ohio State is 13-0 all-time vs. teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and is now 2-0 all-time against Delaware State. The teams last met in 1990.

The attendance for the game Thursday was 6,388.
