MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Alayna Markwordt had five goals and two assists as the No. 18-ranked Ohio State women’s lacrosse team rolled over Duquesne, 16-6, Friday afternoon at Joe Walton Field on the campus of Robert Morris. The Buckeyes are now 3-2 on the season, while the Dukes drop to 0-4.
Kirsten Donahue notched her first career multi-goal game, scoring three off the bench. A total of nine Buckeyes found the back of the net, including three substitutes. In goal, Mean Fiorito saw her first collegiate action, making nine saves through all 60 minutes of action.
Jayme Beard scored the first goal of the contest at the 27:42 mark in the first half and the Buckeyes rolled out to an 8-1 lead over the next nine-plus minutes of action. Three of Markwordt’s five goals came in that stretch and Donahue scored two back-to-back within eight seconds as Ohio State built the seven-goal lead by 18:45.
Each squad scored a pair in the final half of the period and sent the game into intermission at 10-3 in favor of the Buckeyes.
The momentum carried into the second half as Markwordt scored her final two goals in the first 10 minutes and Brittney Zerhusen added another to give Ohio State a 10-goal lead and running clock with 16:24 to play. The Dukes scored three of the next four goals, cutting the lead to 14-6 at 5:03, but scores from Jacqueline Orona and Caylee Rafalko quickly erased their efforts and ended the ame at 16-6.
Ohio State held a 32-19 advantage in shots and a 20-10 margin in groundballs. After a 10-3 lead in draw controls in the first half, the Buckeyes finished on top 13-11.
The Buckeyes return to action at 3 p.m. next Saturday, March 13 against Louisville in Columbus. Ranked in the Top 20 for the first time in program history, the No. 19 Cardinals are 3-0 this season with a game against Oregon scheduled for Saturday in Eugene, Ore.
