PEORIA, Ariz. – The Ohio State women’s golf team sits third through two rounds at the Westbrook Spring Invitational after a record-setting day Sunday at Westbrook Village Golf Club. The Buckeyes, 17-under par through two rounds, sit three shots behind first-place Nebraska and one shot behind second-place and No. 17 Oklahoma.
Junior Jaclyn Lee opened the day with a record-setting round, tallying seven birdies and an eagle en route to a program-best 64. The score narrowly edged out Jessica Porvasnik’s previous-best 65 set in the opening round of the same tournament in 2014. The Calgary, Alberta, native followed up her career-best round with a second-round 3-under 69 to sit third heading into the final round, three strokes behind Oklahoma’s Kaitlin Milligan and two shots back of Nebraska’s Kate Smith.
Sophomore Alex Wright joined Lee in the Top 10, currently sitting in a tie for sixth after going 69-70 on the day. The opening round 69 marked a career-low for the Midlothian, Va., product. Also going low was sophomore Adeena Shears, who followed up an opening-round 74 with a career-low 5-under 67 to tie for 12th through two rounds.
“We had perfect scoring conditions on a course that was in great shape today,” Therese Hession, Ohio State head coach, said. “I’m so proud of the effort of this team as well as their individual accomplishments. Jaclyn’s 64 was so steady and solid. Alex was steady all day long and Adeena completed a bogey-free round for her career best. We are looking forward to a great day tomorrow and the opportunity to finish strong.”
Freshman Alanis Sakuma, playing as an individual, sits in a tie for 36th at even-par after a career-low 1-under 71 in the second round, while junior Niki Schroeder and senior Rio Watanabe sit in a tie for 48th and 81st, respectively.
Ohio State has tallied four eagles, the most of any team in the field through two rounds, and is currently a tournament-best 21-under on the Par-5’s and second in the field at even-par on Par-3’s through the first day.
Lee has torn up the Par-5’s to the tune of an 8-under score through two rounds while Wright is 5-under on Par-5’s on the opening day. The two lead the field with two eagles apiece.
