COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender and Ashley Adams were named Big Ten co-player and freshman of the week, respectively, in recognition of their performances last week in wins over Purdue and Minnesota.
Lavender breaks the record for all-time Big Ten player of the week honors after she became Ohio State’s career scoring leader (2,587 points) Sunday and setting an NCAA record with 126 straight games with 10 or more points – every game of Lavender’s career. Now with 18 weekly conference honors, Lavender averaged 25.0 points per game last week in breaking Katie Smith’s school record of 2,578 career points. With 29 points against Minnesota Sunday, she also broke the national record for consecutive games in double-figures. In two wins last week, she averaged 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, just missing out on a double-double each time. She shares the honor this week with Michigan State’s Lykendra Johnson.
Adams wins her second freshman of the week honor after averaging 11.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 blocks and 2.5 assists. Her highlight game of the week came Sunday at Minnesota where she recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with a career-high six blocks and four steals in a seven-point win. Against Purdue Thursday, Adams finished with 10 points while adding six rebounds and three more blocks.
Ohio State is back in action this Thursday vs. Penn State at Value City Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
