COLUMBUS, Ohio – Shelaine Larson, a senior thrower on the Ohio State women’s track and field team, was named female Athlete of the Week by the Big Ten Tuesday. Larson concluded her indoor home career Saturday by setting a career best in winning the weight throw at the Scarlet and Gray Invitational in French Field House.

A native of Ventura, Calif., Larson reached a provisional qualifier to the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships with her winning mark of 66 feet, 3 inches (66-3/ 20.19 meters), which stands as the top throw in the Big Ten heading into the conference meet this Saturday and Sunday at Ann Arbor, Mich. She also heads to the league meet this weekend with the No. 2 measure in the shot put at 49-5 1/2 (15.07m).

Larson’s weight mark from the Scarlet and Gray Invite also serves as the 11th-best throw in the nation during the 2005 season.

A graduate of Buena High School, Larson is the first Buckeye to claim Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors this season and the 11th OSU thrower to win the award in the last two indoor seasons.

Larson and the women’s team begin competition at Michigan’s Indoor Track Building at 9 a.m. Saturday. The men travel to West Lafayette, Ind. and Purdue’s Lambert Fieldhouse and are scheduled for a 10 a.m. start Saturday, with competition running through Sunday.
