COLUMBUS, Ohio – A two-out RBI single by senior Nicole Lancaster in the fifth inning broke a scoreless game and the Ohio State softball team went on to defeat IUPUI, 2-0, Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. Ohio State (29-14, 8-2 Big Ten) improves to 14-0 at home and wins its 11th-consecutive game, while IUPUI (12-28, 7-8 Mid-Continent) was held to three hits by OSU freshman Kim Reeder.
The RBI for Lancaster (Magnolia, Ohio/Sandy Valley) was her first of the season and gave Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) all the support she would need. Reeder struck out four to improve to 13-6 on the season, which is tied for the third-most wins by a freshman in Ohio State history (Jamee Juarez in 2004).
Reeder, who has won nine of her last 10 decisions, also tied Juarez for strikeouts by a freshman in a season with 118. The game marked Reeder’s team-leading fourth shutout and 13th complete game of the season.
OSU sophomore Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) added an RBI single two batters after Lancaster delivered her RBI single. Vanderink finished the game 1-for-2 at the plate, upping her average to .400 (14-for-35) in her last 11 games, which includes five multiple-hit games.
OSU junior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) went 2-for-2, upping her average to .458 (11-for-24) in her last 10 games. Freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) had the other Buckeye hit, her fifth double of the season in the sixth inning. Junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) walked twice in the game, giving her 76 free passes for her career, which are second all-time at Ohio State and trails only All-American Krinon Clark (1991-94), who had 118.
Ohio State and IUPUI will meet in game two at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
