Kyle Snyder Captures Third NCAA Crown, Ohio State Places Second

Share

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Kyle Snyder walked off the mat for the final time donning an Ohio State singlet Saturday night in Northeast Ohio. He did so as a three-time NCAA Champion following a 3-2 victory over Michigan’s Adam Coon in the heavyweight finals. The Buckeyes crushed their program record with 133.5 team points at the NCAA Championships (previous high was 110.0 in 2017).

BUCKEYE BITS
? 38-16 overall record
? 1 national champion
? 2 finalists
? 8 All-Americans (program record)
? 8 major decisions
? 4 tech falls
? 2 pins (and an injury default and medical forfeit)
? 133.5 team points (most in program history)

Four of the top-5 teams in the standings were Big Ten representatives:
1st | Penn State (141.5 team points)
2nd | Ohio State (133.5)
3rd | Iowa (97.0)
T-4th | Michigan (80.0)
T-4th | North Carolina State (80.0)

After exchanging quick escapes to start the second and third periods, Snyder’s slide-by in the third period lifted him ahead 3-1 and The Q went into a frenzy. Coon was able to escape with 13 seconds remaining, but Snyder ultimately closed it out as a 3-2 victor.

Following a win for Arizona State’s Zahid Valencia at 174 pounds, the Buckeyes controlled their own destiny in the team race. Myles Martin drilled a deep shot and momentarily placed his Nittany Lion opponent on his back. A split second later, Bo Nickal was the one on top though. He flipped Martin over and recorded the title-clinching fall.
