COLUMBUS, Ohio- Justin Kronauge, a senior co-captain on the No. 4 Ohio State men’s tennis team (29-1; 10-0 Big Ten), was named Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week for the third time this season the conference announced Tuesday.
The laurel brings the Buckeyes’ total to 11 this season, which leads the league. Sophomore Chase Buchanan has six awards in 2010 to lead the Scarlet and Gray (Feb. 2, Feb. 23, March 9, March 16, April 6, April 13). Earlier this season, Kronauge earned the accolade Feb. 2 and March 30, while freshman Dino Marcan has two (Jan. 19 and Feb. 16).
A Dayton, Ohio, native Kronauge won two singles matches and two doubles matches to help the Buckeyes win their fifth-consecutive Big Ten regular-season title with a perfect 10-0 record in league play.
In wins against Northwestern (6-1) and Wisconsin (4-3), Kronauge, ranked 40th in the nation, defeated Spencer Wolf of Northwestern 6-1, 6-0, while claiming a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 19 Moritz Baumann of Wisconsin at Nos. 3 and 2 singles, respectively. Against the Badgers with the score tied 3-3, Kronauge claimed the Buckeyes’ 29th win of the season after winning back-to-back sets over Baumann. With the two singles wins, he improves to a team-high 32 wins (three losses), winning his last 21 matches. In doubles, partnered with junior Balazs Novak, Kronauge downed two Big Ten pairs, winning each match by at least four points. The Buckeye duo remains perfect on the season with a 16-0 record.
In singles, the two-time All-Big Ten honoree has 143 career victories, which is second. He is three wins shy of tying former Buckeye Steven Moneke (2006-09) for first (146). In doubles, Kronauge became the sixth Buckeye in program history to hit the 100-win mark. He currently has 122 career doubles wins, which is second. The two-time ITA All-American is three wins shy of tying former Buckeye Bryan Koniecko (2006-09) for first (125). He also is just the third Buckeye in Ohio State history to have at least 100 singles wins and 100 doubles wins. Koniecko and Moneke are the other two who have accomplished the feat.
The Buckeyes travel to the 2010 Big Ten Tournament this weekend in Bloomington, Ind., as the No.1-seed. Ohio State earned a bye into the quarterfinals at 8 a.m. Friday and will face the winner of No. 8-seed Penn State/No. 9-seed Northwestern.
