COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kristen Romano, a freshman on the Ohio State swimming team, has had a big weekend representing Puerto Rico at the Mayaguez International Swimming Open in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. The event is a qualifier for the Central American and Caribbean Games in Baranquilla, Colombia, in July.
Romano set the Puerto Rican women’s record Saturday night in the 400 individual medley. The record came a day after she picked up a win in the 400 freestyle. Romano then qualified in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:17.23, her second national record of the event. This was the first meet Romano competed for the Puerto Rican national team.
In her first season for Ohio State, Romano earned All-America honors in the 400 individual medley, 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay. In addition, Romano set a school record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.86 back in December.
