COLUMBUS, Ohio – Miho Kowase, a sophomore on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, battled from a set down to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals of main draw singles of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Sunday afternoon in Urbana, Illinois.
After falling in the first set, 6-1, Kowase responded with back-to-back wins to take the match in three, 6-1, 6-3, vs. DePaul’s Patricia Fargas. With the win, the Tokyo, Japan, product advances and is slated to face Michigan’s Emina Bektas in Monday’s quarterfinals at the Atkins Tennis Center at 11 a.m. ET.
The Buckeyes started the morning with two tandems competing in the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw. The third-seeded duo of Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus dropped an 8-2 decision to Michigan’s Emina Bektas and Alex Najaran. Grainne O’Neill and Anna Sanford also fell in the quarterfinals, losing to Notre Dame’s Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson, 8-5.
In the round of 16 of main draw singles, Niehaus fell in straight sets to Michigan’s Ronit Yurovsky, 7-5, 6-2. Despite winning the first set, Ferny Angeles Paz was unable to hold off Robinson and lost in three, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. Kowase remains as the only Buckeye in the singles main draw.
