COLUMBUS, Ohio – Bryan Koniecko (Long Island, N.Y./Syosset), of the second ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team, was named the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Wednesday.
Koniecko, the 2006 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, helped the Buckeyes beat No. 13 Florida State 7-0 Sunday at the Jesse Owens West Tennis Center. Koniecko, ranked No. 62 nationally in singles, won his match at the No. 1 singles spot against Florida State’s Ytai Abougzar 6-3, 6-5 to improve his season record to 9-4 Koniecko also won his match at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Koniecko is 3-0 at the No. 1 singles position despite sharing the court with the top ranked singles player in the country, Steven Moneke (So./So., Alten-Busick, Germany/Gesamtschale Giessen-Ost).
It is the first time this year a Buckeye has been recognized as the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. Last season, OSU had five winners of the award. No. 2 Ohio State is 4-0 on the year and has won 44 consecutive matches at home.
No. 2 Ohio State travels to No. 38 Tennessee Friday, then returns home to face No. 37 Kentucky Monday at the Wickertree Tennis and Fitness Center in Columbus.
