COLUMBUS, Ohio– After five days of pre-qualifying and qualifying matches at the 2012 ITA All-American Championships, members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team continued play in the main draw singles and doubles brackets Thursday at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Peter Kobelt advanced to the round of 16 in singles, while also securing a spot in the second round of doubles play with teammate Connor Smith.
Play at the 2012 ITA All-American Championships will continue Friday with third round singles action and second round and quarterfinal doubles matches.
Kobelt, the lone Buckeye who automatically earned a place in the singles main draw, had a successful opening day at the ITA All-American Championships as he won consecutive matches, including a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over No. 10 Anthony Rossi of Kentucky in the first round. Kobelt, a native of New Albany, Ohio, followed that performance with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Joe Salisbury of Memphis to advance to the round of 16.
After an impressive opening day in the singles bracket, Kobelt paired with Smith in the first round of main draw doubles and the tandem handed the host school Tulsa’s Grant Ive and Tristan Jackson an 8-1 loss.
Redshirt freshman Chris Diaz made one of the more impressive runs at the ITA All-American Championships. The Buckeye from Columbus, Ohio, and a product of Bishop Watterson, won eight consecutive matches before falling to No. 1 seed Henrique Cunha of Duke in the second round of the main draw. Diaz entered the championships with a pre-qualifying bid. After winning four consecutive matches in the pre-qualifiers, Diaz reeled off three consecutive victories in the qualifier bracket, which included a win over teammate Smith, 7-6(3), 6-2. In his opening match in the main draw, Diaz downed Shane Vinsant of Texas A&M, 6-3, 6-1.
In addition to competing in the doubles portion of the All-American championships, Smith earned a spot in the singles qualifier draw. Smith, who hails from Tampa, Fla., won back-to-back matches vs. Rifat Biktyakokv of Oklahoma State, 6-4, 7-5, and C. Salif-Kante of Florida A&M, 6-0, 4-1 (ret.) before running into teammate Diaz in the qualifier final. However, Smith earned a place in the consolation singles bracket and opened play with a 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-1 victory vs. Illinois’ Farris Gosea.
In his debut as a Buckeye, freshman Constantin Christ advanced to the singles pre-qualifier final before falling in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to Adam Lee of Wake Forest. A native of Eppstein, Germany, Christ rallied from a set down (6-3) in his first collegiate match vs. Andre Stenger of Nebraska to capture the next two sets, 6-0, 6-3. Christ then downed Air Force’s Alex Grubbs in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
• Callahan withdrew in the second round of pre-qualifying before losing to Jeremy Efferding of Texas A&M in the first round of qualifying, 6-1, 7-6. • Metka lost in the third round of pre-qualifying to James McKie of Drake University, 6-4, 6-2. • Callahan and Diaz were defeated by Jonathan Brooklyn and Dmytro Kovalyov of Hawaii, 8-5, in the first round of main draw doubles.
