Columbus, Ohio – The Big Ten Conference announced today the selections of Samantha Kimura (Fr., Placentia, Calif.) and Anna Smith (Fr., Walnut, Calif.) to its 1999 all-Big Ten softball team. The duo were both selected to the third-team.
“These two student-athletes represent the future of this program,” head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “To be freshmen and named to the all-conference team is impressive to say the very least. The two of them have only scratched the surface of what they are truly capable of doing. When we recruited them, we knew they each had something special. This honor justifies our beliefs even more. It will be exciting to watch them improve in the coming years. ” Kimura was selected at first base. In conference play, she batted .274 with seven runs batted in and carried an impressive .989 fielding percentage.
“This is a great honor,” Kimura said. “It’s nice to get recognized for it. Anna and I have played together for so long that it makes this honor even more special.”
Smith was selected as an outfielder. In conference play, she led OSU with a .328 batting average and tied for the team lead with four steals. She committed just one error in 26 chances (.962 fielding percentage).
“I’m very surprised,” Smith said. “I have something to really build on in the coming year. I can really thank my teammates for helping me along this year. Without them, this would have never happened.”
