COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the second time this season, Ohio State sophomore Kelsey Mitchell has been named the National and Big Ten Player of the Week. The award comes on the heels of a pair of Buckeye victories over ranked teams.
ESPNW and College Sports Madness each named Mitchell the National Player of the Week for the second time this year and the third time in her career after she averaged 26.5 points per game in wins over No. 22 Michigan State and No. 5 Maryland. Mitchell also claimed her second B1G weekly honor of the year and the fourth of her career.
The Cincinnati, Ohio native scored a game-high 25 points in the 85-80 win over MSU which included going 13-of-13 from the free throw line. She was 9-of-9 from the line and had 15 points in the decisive fourth quarter. Mitchell also dished-out a game-high five assists against the Spartans.
In the Buckeyes’ 80-71 victory on the road over No. 5 Maryland, Mitchell again notched a game-high 28 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and four steals. She led Ohio State to its first win over a top-5 ranked team since Dec. 20, 2006.
Mitchell and the Buckeyes will have a pair of home games this week as they host Indiana on Thursday, Jan. 7 and Rutgers on Sunday, Jan. 10.
