Complete 2000-01 Men’s Basketball Schedule%^$

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio–The 2000-01 version of Ohio State men’s basketball will open the season at home vs. Yale Nov. 17 before traveling to Anchorage, Alaska for the 2000 Alaska Shootout Nov. 22-25. A total of 11 NCAA Tournament teams from last year dot the schedule with another three teams playing in the postseason 2000 National Invitation Tournament.%^$

%^$The Shootout field will include DePaul, Florida State, Missouri, Rhode Island, Syracuse, Valparaiso and host Alaska-Anchorage. Ohio State last played in the Shootout in 1981, its only other appearance in the event. The Buckeyes were 2-1 with wins over McNeese State and Georgetown and a one-point loss to Iona (58-57) in the opener.%^$

%^$Ohio State will host the University of Massachusetts Dec. 10, St. John’s Dec. 13 (ESPN2) and Kansas Dec. 23 (CBS) to highlight the non-conference schedule. The Buckeyes will travel to Alabama Feb. 17 for a nationally-televised (CBS) contest with the Crimson Tide.%^$

%^$The Big Ten season gets underway Jan. 3, 2001 at home against Northwestern followed by the road opener against Illinois Jan. 6. Ohio State opens the league season with four of its first five Big Ten games at home, including Penn State (Jan. 10), Minnesota (Jan. 13) and Michigan (Jan. 18/ESPN). The end of the season finds the Buckeyes on the road for six of the last eight contests.%^$

%^$Michigan State and Ohio State, the co-champions of the Big Ten last year, will meet twice in seven days. The Buckeyes travel to East Lansing Jan. 21 (CBS) before hosting the Spartans a week later Jan. 27. OSU travels to Wisconsin Jan. 24 to highlight a stretch of three 2000 Final Four opponents in seven days. The Badgers make a Feb. 10 appearance in Columbus.%^$

%^$This year, Ohio State will meet Iowa, Indiana, Purdue and Michigan just once. The Michigan and Indiana (Jan. 31) games will be at home. The Iowa (Feb. 7) and Purdue (Feb. 14) contests will be on the road.%^$

%^$Three league games will be featured on national television highlighted by the CBS game at Michigan State. Home games against Michigan and Illinois (Feb. 22) will be televised by ESPN.%^$

%^$All remaining games will be televised by ESPN Regional television and will be shown locally in Columbus on WBNS-TV Ch. 10.%^$

%^$Ohio State has one remaining date to fill and is in the process of finding another opponent.%^$

%^$Jim O’Brien, Ohio State head coach, and his staff have pieced together a competitive and challenging schedule from start to finish.%^$

%^$”We think this schedule is as challenging, competitive and difficult as one could have,” O’Brien said. “With nationally-prominent programs like Kansas, St. John’s and UMass at home, we feel like it is an attractive schedule.%^$

%^$”On the road we will play in a difficult field at the Alaska Shootout, at Alabama, who many feel has the best talent in the Southeastern Conference, and the annual grind of the Big Ten Conference,” O’Brien said.%^$

The Buckeyes could play 13 games against NCAA Tournament teamsfrom last year. Included in that total is no less than four gamesagainst 2000 Final Four squads–Wisconsin and NCAA ChampionMichigan State.%^$ The Buckeyes could play 17 games againstpostseason participants from 2000. In addition to the 13 possiblegames against NCAA Tournament teams, four games, two against PennState and one each against Michigan and UMass are scheduled for2000-01.%^$ Ohio State has played in the Alaska Shootout just oncebefore, in 1981-82. OSU was 2-1 in the Shootout that year. A lossto Iona (58-57, 11/27/81) preceded wins over McNeese State (63-60,11/28) and No. 5 Georgetown (47-46, 11/28).%^$ Ohio State will playPurdue (A), Michigan (H), Iowa (A) and Indiana (H) just once duringthe Big Ten season this year. Home-and-home meetings will beagainst Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, MichiganState and Penn State.%^$ Every Ohio State game, including the twoexhibitions, will be televised again in 2000-01. CBS will televisethree OSU games, ESPN two and ESPN2 broadcasting one contest. Othernational games could be picked up at the Alaska Shootout and theBig Ten Tournament.%^$ The Buckeyes will play 17 scheduled homegames and will have 19 home dates when the two exhibitions areincluded.%^$ Ohio State will tie the record for most home games ina season with 17 scheduled home dates. The Buckeyes competed in 17games last year and went 15-2 at Value City Arena. OSU also played17 in 1985-86, when it compiled a record of 14-3.%^$ The 2000Alaska Shootout consists of five NCAA Tournament teams. Valparaiso,Syracuse, DePaul, Missouri and Ohio State all participated lastseason.
