COLUMBUS, Ohio – Donnie Darr, Ohio State men’s golf head coach, has tabbed JJ Wood as an assistant coach for the Buckeye program. Wood made an immediate impact at Rice University in 2014, helping the Owls to the program’s first ever Conference USA Championship after joining the staff mid-season in January.

`I’m very excited to have JJ join our program,” said head coach Donnie Darr. “I am very confident he will hit the ground running and have an immediate impact on our players. He has a lot of experience as a player and a teacher of the game, but what impresses me the most is his ability to communicate. He has an infectious personality and I know he is going to make others around him better.”

Wood brings a wealth of instructional experience and playing success to the Buckeyes. Prior to his stint with Rice, he served as the Director of Instruction at the Pecan Grove Country Club just outside of Houston, Texas, where he developed instruction programs and taught private lessons. He played his final season with the Sooners in 2006-07 and was the team’s stroke average leader while working towards his Master’s education degree completed in 2008.

Along with competing in the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship, Wood earned medalist honors at the Arizona Men’s Amateur the same year. He played professionally in the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in 2008, as well as, other tours as a pro.

As an instructor, Wood has also coached at Calabasas Country Club (Calabasas, Calif.), Woodforest Golf Club (Montgomery, Texas) and Matt Swanson School of Golf (Houston, Texas). Additionally, Wood has industry experience as a corporate sales executive for the Houston Golf Association and as a learning enhancement center supervisor with Oklahoma’s Athletic Academic Services department.
