COLUMBUS, Ohio – Alex Ivanov, a senior co-captain and goalkeeper on the Ohio State men’s soccer team, is one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award, the organization announced Tuesday. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
“It is an honor to be selected as a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award,” Ivanov said. “This is only made possible by the immense support of my teammates, coaches and support staff that all work very hard to make men’s soccer a success at Ohio State. I would like to thank all of them for their help in my journey as a student-athlete and this nomination reflects their support.”
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 men’s candidates and 30 women’s candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through November 24. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Men’s and Women’s College Cup® championships in December.
“On and off the field, Alex leads by example,” head coach John Bluem said. “He is well-respected by his teammates and opponents and works hard at practice every day. He is the definition of what it means to be a Buckeye and this is a great honor for him.”
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards a senior season can bring.
Ivanov is in his first year as captain for the Buckeyes. The native of Strongsville, Ohio, Ivanov graduated last spring with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering, collecting an impressive 3.70 cumulative GPA. He is currently pursuing a second degree in sports industry as a post graduate independent study this fall. In 2013, Ivanov became the first Buckeye in program history to be named an Academic All-American after being named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Third Team. A 2013 Capital One All-District honoree, Ivanov has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors three times in his career and has been named an OSU Scholar-Athlete the last for years. In 2012, Ivanov also was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Ivanov leads the Big Ten this season with 59 saves and is second in saves per game (4.54) for the Scarlet and Gray. In 2013, Ivanov was named a second team All-Big Ten selection and was selected as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week three times during his junior season. The OSU goalkeeper finished 2013 with 110 saves, which is fifth on the OSU all-time single season saves list. Ivanov concluded the year fifth in the country in stops (110), sixth in saves percentage (.880) and second in saves per game (6.47). He has tallied 13 shutouts in 37 starts for the Buckeyes.
In addition to his work in the classroom, Ivanov has volunteered with the 2nd and 7 Foundation, reading to elementary students. He also has been a part of three different “Kids Kicking Cancer” events, where the team has held a skills clinic hosted by Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Rainbow & Babies Children’s Hospital and the James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute. Ivanov also will be the point person for the team’s Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. He also plans to work with his professor in the engineering department where he will volunteer at local middle schools and high schools that promote math, science and engineering.
