James Allen Fausnaugh III, more commonly known as Trey, is a junior pitcher for the Buckeyes. There is no question the right-hander from Circleville, Ohio, has a distinct accent that clearly reflects his country flare. The house he grew up in is surrounded by farmland though the metropolis of Columbus is making its way toward Circleville, making it feel a little less rurel. Owning a huge ranch is one of his ambitions of the finance and risk management major, who helps out his grandfather on his farm. Fausnaugh is a family oriented guy, who enjoys the camaraderie of his teammates, who he thinks have the talent to make a push at the College World Series after possibly earning a Big Ten championship ring.
Do you have any pets?
“I have a bloodhound type dog. She was a stray when we first got her. She’s house trained and very protective. She’s such a great dog.”
What do you miss most from home?
“I would say, having the sun shine through my bedroom window instead of a street light.”
What is your favorite vacation spot?
“Bradenton, Fla., has cool training facilities and is so close to the beach. There are spring training sites nearby that we stop by and watch the players practice.”
Who is your favorite baseball player?
“Nolan Ryan by far. He was one of the greatest pitchers when I was growing up. He threw harder than anyone else in the game.”
Do your teammates give you a hard time for anything?
“Sometimes I stay in and study a lot. They make fun of me for staying home and not going out with them.”
What do you want to do after you graduate?
“I would want to continue helping my grandpa farm and also get a job in the Columbus area that pertains to one of my two majors: finance and risk management.”
If you could have any job in the world what would it be?
“I would love to own a huge ranch and build a huge house right in the middle of it. Then I would get a lot of cattle and run my own ranch.”
What have you enjoyed most about playing baseball at Ohio State?
“I like the competition and knowing when you go out there it is the best you are facing. I like the camaraderie of the team. We are there to pick each other up if one of us has a bad outing. In practice we pair up and help each other. It is new this year and I think it helps.”
What do you like most about attending Ohio State?
“I’m in the Fisher College of Business, which is a nationally ranked program. I think my degree will mean something when I get out into the real world.”
What are your personal and team goals this season?
“Personally, I want to establish myself as one of the best relievers in the league. This is the time for the team to put it together. This is our best shot we’ve had of getting to Omaha (for the College World Series) since I got here. The personnel is all here. I want a Big Ten championship ring and I know everyone else does to.”
If you could have three wishes what would you wish for?
“I would wish happiness for my friends and family, a huge ranch and to pitch for the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series.”
