Athletics Communications intern Maddy Humphrey is venturing around campus this summer, checking in on some of her Bucks Go Pro peers and sharing their internship story. Next up is Seth Kinker for the Buckeye Baseball program.
Seth Kinker is interning with the OSU Golf Club this summer. He is a rising senior from Huntington, West Virginia and is majoring in Sports Industry with a minor in Business.
The OSU Golf Club is home to two of the top collegiate 18-hole courses in the country. Courses Scarlet and Gray are home to the OSU men and women’s golf teams. In 2006, OSU’s own, Jack Nicklaus renovated Course Scarlet. The Pro Shop, where Kinker works for the majority of his time, is located at the front of the OSU Golf Club.
Throughout the week, Kinker’s daily tasks involve assisting with the front desk at the Pro Shop with tee times and organization of both Scarlet & Gray courses. Also, he helps manage inventory in the basement and keeps track of what comes in and what comes out of the Pro Shop.
Kinker has truly enjoyed meeting everyone who also works throughout the golf course and interacting with all the members, specifically the ones who come multiple times a week. Kinker admires golf, so his location for his internship has been ideal, especially when he gets to play a few rounds after work hours. While working at the OSU Golf Club, Kinker has been able to experience the OSU alumni football outing. All former Buckeyes stars, that are in the NFL or were previously, show up to participate in the golf outing. Another exciting event that has happened during Kinker’s internship a few weeks ago was Mike Conley, a point guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, showed up for a rounds and Kinker met him while scheduling his tee time.
Marc Lucas, General Manager of the OSU Golf Club, is Kinker’s supervisor for the summer. “My supervisor has taught me the value of making quality relationships with every employee day in and day out. He also has taught me the value of managing time and keeping a consistent work schedule before the week even begins,” Kinker said about his experience with Lucas for this summer’s Bucks Go Pro internship.
Kinker has played a key role out of the bullpen for the baseball team throughout his career. At the beginning of the 2017 season, he was named to the Big Ten Players to Watch List and the NCMWA Stopper of The Year Preseason Watch List. Kinker went 3-1 and held a strong 2.95 ERA in the 58 innings pitched. In 2016, he led the B1G in appearances, taking the mound 38 times with an incredible 1.65 ERA. Throughout Kinker’s junior season (2017) he transitioned into a starting role, with his first start against Michigan on May 7th, throwing six innings and three strikeouts to claim his first win as a starter. Kinker is currently ranked tenth overall in appearances in Ohio State baseball history. He will be a senior for the 2018 season and will continue to be a significant player for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
“I plan to bring an even stronger work ethic back to the baseball program in the fall, as well as a better understanding of my personal identity, that has been developed throughout the internship this summer. Not only has the Bucks Go Pro experience taught me how to manage my time within the work setting, but it also has brought forth quality information on who I am and what I am about for the future,” Kinker concluded with a reflection on his experience with the internship thus far, and what he hopes to carry over into the fall and spring baseball seasons, for his senior year.
