COLUMBUS, Ohio–Two Buckeyes began competition Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., but were unable to break into the top eight. In field finals, George Hoover (So., Erie, Pa.), the 2001 Big Ten outdoor champion in the javelin throw, placed 18th with a distance of 197-9. Donica Merriman (Sr., Trotwood, Ohio) finished fifth in Heat 2 (23.48) of the 200-meter dash prelims and will not advance to Saturday’s final.
The Buckeyes begin more preliminary competition tonight at 7:30 p.m. EDT when Merriman runs in the 100-meter hurdles. Onica Frasier (So., Broklyn, N.Y.) and Tina Johnson (Sr., Burlington, N.J.) will compete in the 400 at 8:10 p.m. The men open competion at 8:20 p.m. when Andrew Pierce (Sr., Yellow Springs, Ohio) competes in the 400. The men’s 4×400 relay begins at 10:00 p.m., followed by Ian Connor (Sr., Lexington, Ohio) in the 3,000 steeplechase at 10:15 p.m.
