Forward from Chatham, Ontario, becomes first Buckeye to lead the league in conference-only scoring
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Hokey Langan, a forward on the Ohio State women’s hockey team, has earned her fourth WCHA Rookie of the Week award, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced Wednesday, after becoming the first Buckeye to win the league’s scoring title. The Chatham, Ontario native had 43 points in 28 conference games, including tying for first in goals with 21 against league opponents.
Langan’s four WCHA Rookie of the Week awards ties the record set by Natalie Spooner last season. Ohio State collected a total of eight weekly honors this season.
Against St. Cloud State last weekend, Langan pulled away for the title with two points in a home series, Feb. 19-20. She set up the second Ohio State goal in a 3-2 loss Friday, before starting the Buckeye rally Saturday with a power play goal with 1:58 left in regulation. OSU went on to tie the game, 4-4, and win the following shootout.
With 48 points overall this season, she ties for the third-most in Ohio State history. Both her goal (22) and assist (26) totals also rank in the top 5 in the OSU record books. She has led the NCAA in rookie points per game for most of the season, currently atop the category with 1.41 (good for ninth overall).
The fifth-seed Buckeyes next travel to fourth-seed Wisconsin for the WCHA First Round Playoffs, Feb. 26-28. The best-of-three series will be played at the Eagles Nest hockey rink in Verona, Wis. Games begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary).
Ohio State split the season series (2-2) with the Badgers, winning the Friday games both in Madison and Columbus. The winner of the series advances to the WCHA Final Faceoff, March 6-7 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.
