COLUMBUS, OHIO – Ohio State head wrestling coach Russ Hellickson has signed a contract with NBC Sports to do play-by-play for the wrestling events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Hellickson has now been a part of the wrestling broadcast team for the past five Olympics.

“It’s a real honor to work the Olympic Games for NBC Sports,” Hellickson said. “As a competitor, the Olympics were special to me. Covering these great athletes for television is another great thrill.”

Hellickson’s Olympic broadcasting career began in 1984 as the wrestling color commentator for the Los Angeles Summer Games, aired on ABC. Four years later, NBC sought Hellickson’s services doing play-by-play for the summer games in Seoul, South Korea. The network asked him back in that same capacity for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.

Hellickson is not the only member of his family who has worked in the Olympics. His wife, Nancy, has been a researcher for each of the Games Hellickson has worked.

“I have always dreamed of going to Australia,” Hellickson added. “This gives me the perfect reason to go.”
