Ohio State women’s swimmer Griet Buelens broke the Belgian national record in the 200-meter butterfly (short course) by two seconds, thus qualifying for the 2005 European Championships.

Buelens, a native of Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium (Ursulinen Mechelen), clocked in her first Belgian record with a 2:11.55, eclipsing the former Belgian of 2:13.68. Buelens previous personal best in the event was 2:14.38, a difference of nearly three seconds. With her time, Buelens qualified for the 2005 European Championships which open Dec. 2.

Buelens also has recorded three personal-best times aside from the record in the 200-meter butterfly. In a handful of meets throughout the summer, she has broken her own best times in the 50- and 100-meter butterfly and in the 100-meter freestyle.

Currently, Buelens is competing at the Belgian national championships, which conclude Sunday. Throughout the meet she will be competing in the 50-, 100-, 200-, 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter freestyle, the 50-, 100- and 200-meter butterfly and the 400-meter individual medley, all of which are short course meters.
